TemboSouth Africa Handgun Hunt???
I am thinking about another SA handgun Hunt for plains game. The last time I was there was in 2004 and I understand the regulations re. handguns have changed drastically. Any PH recomendations? I have read some good reviews about Bobby Hanson Safaris, especially from handgunners. Any other outfitters who are handgun hunter friendly?

OldHandgunHunterI hunt Africa exclusively with handguns and have had exceptional experiences - as have many of my handgun hunting friends - with Madubula Safaris. John Abraham and his other PH's have accomodated serious handgun hunters in South Africa for more than 15 years and, if you'll consult the SCI Record Books, you'll see that they've done so to very good effect.
I'll be spending the entire mont of October with Madubula hunting dangerous game in Mozambique next month - an expensive adventure, so you know that I have confidence in them. But, their true specialty is South African plainsgame.

John and Vlam spoke very highly of your group when I was on Safari with him a year ago.
Good luck to you fellers again this year.....

We must tip well. LOL
There's no group going this year, just me. But, I expect that we'll get a group together again sometime soon.
I usually hunt with John, but I'll be with Vlam on this trip. Vlam makes one happy to be carrying just a handgun, he LIKES to walk. LOL

I hunted in South Africa with a handgun in 2005 and again in 4/08. There was no difference in regulations between those two times that I could notice. I had my firearm temporary import permit authorized through Air2000 who also did my meet and greet. I spent maybe 15 minutes getting through customs and another few minutes getting the permit. It took a lot longer getting some travelers checks changed into Rand.

Just work through Air2000 and Anne will ensure that you have no trouble at all. I always use them and have never been delayed for more than a few minutes after arrival in Jo'burg.
For quite some time, the rules have limited hunters to three handguns, each in a different caliber -- and that has been my usual arsenal for my trips -- but, I understand that these rules have been lightened a tad and now four handguns are permitted. I didn't notice that in time to take advantage for this trip, but it will be nice in the future.
One caution: I use custom handguns chanbered in wildcat calibers and permits for these can be a little more tricky and properly headstamped brass is always a requirement. If you're not using standard commerically made guns and ammo, this can be worked by Air200, but you'll want to leave them a little extra time to work the process for getting you pre-issued permits. With custom guns/ammo, it would be a major mistake to not get your permits on a pre-issued basis.

Woodrow SSingle action revolvers and single shot handguns that are scoped are legal and absolutely no semi-auto handguns or double action handguns, as they are considered defensive weapons by the SA authorities. OHH knows what he is talking about when it comes to hunting africa with handguns. Be sure to check the latest rulings before heading to the airport...things can change either way at the drop of a hat over there.

Woodrow STembo...I could be tempted into another handgun hunt over there depending on the details of the hunt. Keep it going and lets see where it ends up. I already have a zebra, gemsbok, warthog, blesbok, black wildebeest and a kudu(but I need a bigger one...58 incher) so it will have to be an area with some other beasts that I need to bag yet, like eland, bushbuck, waterbuck etc.

That's what I was afraid of, every hunting handgun I own says "S&W" on it.
Thanks for the info.

GrumulkinI know semiauto handguns are not allowed but I believe double action revolvers are allowed. At least in 2005, the guy I hunted with had a double action S&W Revolver and he had no problems bringing it in.
I believe the key is to make sure it looks like it's good for hunting. That is, it shouldn't have a real short barrel and it should have a scope.

Woodrow SI went in 2006 and the regs were no DA revolvers. As I stated, things change at the drop of a hat so be aware of whatever may apply to your situation.
