Two Lower Gweru men who hunted wild animals with dogs in a game reserve have to perform community service and compensate the owner of the game they killed.
Givemore Ncube (27) of Chief Bunina and Nkosiyentsha Mloyi (21) of Northampton Range Farm killed a pale cat and a warthog with dogs in Lenton Safari game reserve.
They were charged for hunting without a licence or permit when they appeared before Gweru magistrate Ms Jeslene Mashiri who started with a six-month-jail sentence for each man. But she suspended one month for four years on condition the two do not commit a Parks and Wildlife related offence. A further three months were further suspended on condition they perform 105 hours of community service each and the remaining two months were suspended on condition they pay restitution of US$500 by December 31.
Prosecutor Mr Michael Mhene proved beyond doubt that on October 12, Ncube went into Lenton Safari reserve and caught a pale cat.
Scouts at the reserve received information that Ncube was in possession of the animal which he had caught in the reserve.
They went to his homestead but he managed to evaded the scouts who eventually arrested him on October 16 before he was handed over to the police.
Mr Mhene told the court that Mloyi went to the same game reserve with dogs sometime in May and he caught and killed a warthog.
In the process, game scouts heard the noise from dogs and they proceeded to where he was.
Mloyi fled and a follow up to his homestead led to the recovery of two tusks.
They surrendered them to the police who eventually arrested him.
