Walter And His Newly Developed Silencer!
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Walter is teaching one of my young cousins how to work on a lathe.

This has been going on for a number of years, and I got the impression the student is doing better than his teacer.

No suprise there.

Walter got into making silencers for 22 rimfire rifles, and he made some that work very well.

A few weeks ago, both were here, and they both seem to have itchy fingers. So I suggested they might try to make a silencer for a 308 Winchester rifle.

That was my mistake number 1.

As they said they would be happy to make a silencer and install it on a rifle "if I provided them with the rifle"

Walter also added "don't blame us if we screw it up!"

I gave them a BRNO CZ505 rifle, and told them to do whatever they wish to it, as long as I get rifle with a silencer on it.

Yesterday lunch time Walter called "We got your rifle ready"

Me "What about the silncer?"
Walter "I said it is READY! That means it is ready with a silncer on it. We tried it, and it is almost totally silent"

Me "I will believe it when I hear it myself. How did you try it, you have no reduced loads!"

Walter "Ah. We have a surprise for you! Ha ha ha. I cannot believe it myself, but we have found someone who is even more stupid than all three of us put together!"

Me "Don't include me amongst you two! Anyway, who is this character who is more stupid than you lot?"

Walter "Go and sit down and I will tell. Are you sitting down now? This young kid came over to look when were working on the silencer. He got very interested, and wanted to know how we would make the rifle fire without making too much noise! So I hit on an idea! I asked the kid if he wanted to help, and he said yes he would. So I had an idea. I got some Lapua match ammo, and pulled the bullets out of the cases. I asked the kid to count all the powder granules from each case, and keep them seperate. As we wanted to see how many granules we would need to make the rifle fire very quietly"

Me "I don't believe it!"
Walter "I don't believe it myself! But, he did just that. He counted the granules from each case, and put each powder lot from one case in a tissue paper, with the number of granules written on top"

Me "Then what happened?"

Walter "He was having so much fun counting the granules, we asked him to split the amount into two and four. We fired a normal round. It was loud, but not like normal because of the silencer. We then put half a charge in one case and fired it. It was quiter. Next we put a quarter of a charge, and that was almost silent! The poor kid was very impressed"

Me "Bring the rifle here and we would try it. Just make sure that kid does not come here! It is hard enough keeping an eye on you two. I do not need a third nitwit to keep watching!"

Walter "He is going o be very disappointed! can I bring him another time?"

Me "We will see about that"

You should have him put one on the 577 next. Love to see someone slammed in the door of your range and only hear something like a .22.

Hmmmmm. Reduced loads using the standard powder. Sounds like a recipe for a squib round with the bullet stuck in the barrel.

Saeed: I'd stay out of the test tunnel and allow Walter to fire all the loads. Have him check the barrel after every shot. (And do I believe Walter will do this? Roll Eyes)

Saeed,

Perhaps you should put Walter and his crew to work on "silent ammunition!" QSPR Big Grin

A vastly more viable silencer would be one fastened to Walter

OMG!-- my bow is "pull-push feed" - how dreadfully embarrasing!!!!!

Saeed, please inform Walter that his results are entirely unscientific. thumbdown

We need a graph with two axes showing the sound attenuation of his silenced rifle in dB plotted against a granule-by-granule reduction in powder charge. Big Grin

Walter may be on to something here.

If he took 2/3 of the powder out of the T-REX and put a silencer on it you would have a quiet rifle with the power of a 375.

He must be a genius.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

Thanks Allen!

He keeps telling me that he is a genius, and has been for so many years!

He says the only reason I have not realized this fact is because I have an empty ead! As all he tells me passes staright through from one ear to the aother.

I am almost beginning to believe him! As no one would put up with all of Walters adventures and still comes back for more!
