E-Mail Extra-Doug Scandrol attacked by leopard
Dear E-Mail Extra Subscriber
Another PH has been attacked by a leopard in the field. This time it was Doug Scandrol of Scandrol & Swanepoel Safaris. He was attacked while hunting in Zambia yesterday. Luckily, he was not seriously hurt and in an e-mail sent to The Hunting Report from Lusaka, he said that he is returning to the field today to finish guiding his client's safari.
The attack took place yesterday morning in Zambia's Mumbwa GMA Concession where Scandrol was following up on a leopard that a client had wounded the evening before. Scandrol and his team reportedly bumped into the leopard, which charged at close distance. Scandrol shot the animal in midair as it launched itself at him, but the leopard crashed into him and bit him on the right forearm and shoulder. Scandrol had the shotgun wedged between him and the cat and managed to simply sit down and throw the leopard up over himself. The cat died later at a distance.
Scandrol was evacuated to a hospital in Luska for treatment and is in good condition and taking antibiotics. "I am fine," he said in his e-mail note. "This has absolutely no impact on the balance of my season. I just got chewed on a bit."

Oh yeah, no big deal, it's just a flesh wound.

They're a different breed.

BigBBearTalked to Doug via email. Sounds like it was not so bad but he is lucky. Leopard was only 5 yards away when he came. Got a shot into him in the air but still enough life to chew a little. He is already back in camp.

Doug, is one of the most consistant producers of trophy Leopard for his clients, and it stands to reason if you hunt leopard long enough, you gonna get bit!
Doug also had a little set-too with a cape Buffalo a few years ago, but that turned out a little worse than this cat fight. That bull poked a horn right through Doug's thigh, putting him on the mend for some time, on that occasion!

I'm very glad he is OK on his little dance with old spots!

bluefinThat makes two out of the Big 5. Don't think I want to be around for the other 3!
Is there such a thing as a Duiker PH specialist?

kevin hendersonGlad he's ok. I agree with Bluefin. I would have taken up stamp collecting after the buff incident. And don't duikers have those pointy, little horns?

white bisonThere was an incident recently in Namibia..where I
was hunting Leopard this June, apparently the story was an unprovoked attack by a leopard on a PH in a vehicle, and one of the photo tourists. The Leopard departed alive & left the two spending 10 days in intensive care in the hospital...sorry I only have these details...the Leopard wasn't even shot at...maybe invading its territory was enough to irritate him. We got "warning" coughs entering a Leopard's territory & went after the sound which was close...but to no avail.
All game can be individualistic & unpredictable.
But it was unheard of, of a Leopard attack in daylight without any known provocation...its a lot of talk among the farmers there.
Best Regards,
Tom from Cody...
Sounds like the leopard may have had rabies?
