Hippo kills swimmer in Lake Basotu

Nineteen-year-old Gidasam Masahidi (19) resident of Mulbadaw Village, Hanang District has been killed by a hippo while he was swimming in Lake Basotu.

Mr. Parmena Sumary, Manyara Regional Police Commander, said that Masahidi had been swimming with his colleague Zacharia Anthony (21) who was also injured and was still undergoing treatment.

He said that the incident occurred on March 11, this year at 01:45 p.m. while the youths were swimming without taking any precautions while aware that the lake has ferocious animals such as crocodiles and hippos.

Mr. Sumary warned all those who go to swim in the lake that they should take precautions in order to avoid such bleak incidents.

The Village Executive Officer, Mr. Omari Msuya told journalists that was the third time in three years that people were killed by crocodiles or hippos in the Lake Basotu.

Gosh, I'd have been more worried about the crocs!
