Best Caliber for Thick Skinned Game
Best Caliber for Thick Skinned Game
With a .375 H&H magnum as backup to the main DG rifle, double or single barrel, what would you suggest as your primary rifle for thick skinned game? The .375 would be for all plains game and dangerous game in a pinch if the main rifle would become unfunctional.
Thanks,
jfm

JBoutfishnI don't think there is "best" caliber for anything. When I am in DG country, I carry a 416 Rem Mag or a 470 double, depending on the terrain. They both tend to get the job done

If .375 is as big as you can go, so be it. Just shoot it well.

My choice...
In a bolt gun .458 Lott and in a double the .470 NE, or one of its ballistic equivalents such as the .450, or moving up a step the wonderful .500 NE.
It depends somewhat on the game being hunted, as well. A large-caliber DR in a NE caliber is great for close-up hunting of Elephant, but when Buffalo are hunted, at possibly longer range, a scoped rifle with a magnum non-rimmed caliber is your best bet...416 Rigby, 458 Lott or WM, 505 Gibbs, etc.
Or anything shooting Michael458's BBW #13 bullets!!!
If you like a bolt rifle...it is really hard to beat a plain old .458 Win Mag with today's bullets and powders.

MARK H. YOUNGWhat Lane said. A 458 WM and a 375 H&H have got it covered for all but the unusual really long shot.

An accurate 375 H&H can make that unusual really long shot if the shooter is up to it.

Aaron NeilsonHave you guys seen this video of Saeed, and his .375/404? Pretty impressive! Can they can down any faster with a bigger gun?

Aaron, this is not the kind of video people on this forum want to see. A .375 caliber rifle cannot perform that well on dangerous game animals. Saeed must have been using a larger caliber that really does work on dangerous game.

Thanks for the video.
