SUSPECTED Zambian poachers recently killed two elephants and a buffalo at Shumba springs in Kazungula, police have confirmed. More than 10 elephants have been killed in the area over the past four months.
Officer Commanding Police in Victoria Falls district Chief Superintendent Regis Munyaradzi said the police, the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority rangers and some stakeholders were now involved in joint patrols in the area.
“On 7 July, five suspected poachers shot dead an elephant and one buffalo. Rangers patrolling the area heard the gunshots and went in that direction,” he said.
He added that because of the swift response, the poachers did not find time to remove the tusks as they took to their heels leaving behind their luggage.
“The rangers found the dead elephant which still had the tusks in place. They then patrolled the area and came across buffalo remains and another elephant with tusks,” he said.
