reddy375Guide Book on African Hunting
Does anyone know of a Guide book for African or even N.American hunting for that matter? I heard there used to be one for African hunting sometime ago, but it does not seem to exist anymore?
With information on seasons, species, measurements, names of guides, maps etc..?
I think when it comes to the animals aand their habits and rifles, bullets etc for them that Kevin Robertson's(sp?) "The Perfect Shot" is a good start. A couple of Boddington's books on safaris are useful, in fact I think one is titled "Safari".
Much to be learned on the African Hunter website and they publish a couple of guide books.
Try Safari Press for copies.

Kyler HamannBoddington's book entitled "African Experience" has a well rounded account of hunting. It's a great way to gain knowledge.
I don't know how many books would list PH's as that would hurt their shelf life. You better dig through periodicals for the more ephemeral information.
Hope that helps,
Kyler

Russ GouldWe are expecting a small shipment of "Hunting Africa" by Smit et al any day...this is by far the most comprehensive practical reference book I have come across. It's written by Africans and published in Africa. With all respect to Boddington, he's just another wannabe compared to these guys. When it comes in we will put it up on our website.

billrquimbyAfrican Hunter (both editions) and the perfect shot books are fine, but if you want to know which outfitter regularly produces the best game, when and where to find that game, as well as the natural history (size, range, habits, etc.) of all of Africa's huntable game, there's only one book and that's the SCI Record Book of Trophy Animals, African Edition. I'm biased, of course, because I used to be its editor.

reddy375Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking more in terms of actual addresses and contact details of PHs in the differemt countries. Species that are available, seasons, other current info....
Perhaps a similar book for N.America would also be a useful reference book for someone planning a hunt! I am talking about an Annual book not a one off how to...
Appreciate your thoughts on this......

dogcatI looked for the same thing but never came up with a directory of the sort you are looking for. In summary, the businesses change every year and a directory is not practical. For instance, there are over 5000 safari companies in South Africa and another 2000 in Namibia. In Alaska, there are over 1000. It is too many to sort through.
I would suggest joining a local Safari Club (Dallas, Houston and others have them), attend one of the hunting shows such as in Reno, Houston, Dallas, Houston, Harrisburg and ask questions. Lastly, rely on recent references from people you trust. Lastly again, talk to reputable agents such as Wendell Reich, Keith Acheson, Russ Gould, Adam Clement, Mark Young and several others that post on this site.
Good luck...
