STRAY lions that escaped from the Kafue National Park are causing havoc among the rural community in Mumbwa district, says district commissioner Sunday Shamabanse.
In an interview from Mumbwa, Shamabanse said the lions had been on the prowl this week, terrorising farmers on the outskirts of the district, and had devoured several head of cattle.
"At first, they were three, but one of them was gunned down by ZAWA officers but the remaining two are still terrorising farmers. So far, the data I have is that the two lions have killed two cattle on a farm. In the same area, they killed four cattle at Mr Nyati's farm and also six sheep and eight goats," Shamabanse said.
He said the two lions still at large had spread fear in the district, with farmers being the most affected.
"Small-scale and commercial farmers are affected, together with school-going children. So, I told the people not to move at night, they should be in-doors after 17:00 hours. But my appeal to all residents is to be calm, we are doing everything possible to ensure that these lions are gunned down," he said.
And Shamabanse said the district expects further reinforcements from the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to beef up the numbers already stationed in the affected area.
"I am sure in the next two, three days things will come back to normal because the ZAWA officers are on the ground and we want to make sure these lions, which are terrorising farmers are gunned down," said Shamabanse.

Bwana338Dang we need those lions moved to Washington DC.
Everyone indoors by 1700 hours would stop a lot of drug dealing and mayhem.
Heck add a few more lions to LA - Miami & Chicago.

They are scoffing livestock at the moment. Got a wounded Buff that ZAWA failed to sort out. The grass was a bit long apparently and a 7.62 was considered insufficient in calibre. He is big bull so hopefully he will provide some excitement for my first client.
