ShumbaWill,
Why do you fear for Chewore North? Do you think Big5 has a chance of losing the concession?
Will HHK or Chifuti take it over?
I thought the owner of Big5 was/is pretty connected (and somewhat corrupt himself).

NitroXAren't these the auctions for the citizens hunting areas, or are they the commercial concession auctions?

GanyanaThe auctions are for the camps in the Sapi and Nyakasanga areas. They are "chase Libre" hunts auctioned off as 10 or 14 day hunts with a basic bag of 1 or 2 buff a hyaena, a mythical Greysbok, etc and, once you have a camp you can top up the bag with extra animals - like lion or ele or hippo etc. They are held every year.
For the last two years Chifuti has bought all the hunts in sapi and thereby been able to run it effectively as their own concession.
Local fiddles on forex exchange rates have given local farmers and operators a major advantage in the last 4 years. This year though prommises to be interesting... paying in zim you have to pay 15% VAT. and the official exchange rate today was 91000:1 against the US, whilst the black market is only 102,000:1. Ie VAT more than covers the discrepancy.
Chewore North is due to be auctioned to local safari operators later this year for another 5 year lease. All local companies may participate. Big five bought the area on such a public auction 10 years back. Two of the matetsi areas are also up for auction unless their "owners" can swing another roll over of the lease.

HHK has an excellent record of picking up each and every concession that it is interested in getting. The smart money bets on HHK.

Aspen Hill AdventuresWhen I was hunting in Chewore North I met a group there who was very interested in picking up CN. They seemed like a nice bunch, one was an American. Don't know if they will follow through but I know if they do, they plan to keep Gibbo and friends on board. At least that was what was told to me.
The American took one hell of a nice lion when I was there, it was old as the hills. I think my hippo helped him bag his cat!
It will be interesting to see what develops.
Don, I hope you keep us posted.

Darn, looks like I will have to hunt with Gibbo again. Hopefully he gets to keep his "Shumba" Landcruiser.

WillThe lease for Chewore North is over this year, after 2006, and the talk was that Big 5 might not try to get it again. I hope it does bid.
Billy has more money than God so no one can out bid him if he wants it.

ShumbaSo what would a lease on Chewore North cost?
I have a friend who at 35 years old in now literally worth $1 billion. Maybe I can swindle some money out of him. If N'gagi hadn't lost so much weight I could have used him to physically threaten the guy

However, now N'gagi is like a tall, skinny (ugly) supermodel

If the swindle plan doesn't work out, maybe they will take my kids as collateral

So what do you expect the price at auction to be?
What was it last year?
Do the areas actually have game in any decent numbers?

Andrew McLarenNitrox,
PM me and I will send you a copy of the complete Auction Brochure. It gives all the required information and last year's prices for all the camps and all the additional animals.
In good hunting.

bulldog563Would it be possible for someone with deep pockets to purchase a concession as their own private hunting grounds? If so how much? Any idea how this would work and if anyone has done this?
