I’ve been struggling to find if hippo and croc from Mozambique, Zambia, or Zimbabwe are importable into the US. Does anyone have any recent experience regarding this subject? Thanks!

I brought a hippo back from Zambia last year, no extra paper work, teeth were in with the other things.

bwanamrmI don't think hippo are exportable from Moz but would ask for a second opinion... I know they are from Zim and Zam.

txsouthpawThanks for the responses. I’ve imported a leopard (Level 1 CITIES), but it looks like from what I found hippo & croc are Level 2. Just trying to determine if I can confidently import the trophies without major complications.

Safari Specialty ImportersCroc and Hippo from Zambia and Zimbabwe are fine to import. Only need a CITES export permit from country of origin. Will double check on MOZ.

MARK H. YOUNGFYI: If you are considering a croc/hippo hunt the trophy fees in Zambia are about half what they are in Zimbabwe. The prices in Moz are ridiculous and some are tiered depending on length.

bwanamrmDouble-checked. Hippo from Moz are still not importable into the US according to USFW and CITIES.

Safari Specialty ImportersUpdate from USFW on Hippos from Mozambique:
"The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is currently listed under CITES appendix II and there is no trade restriction for specimens originating in Mozambique.
Exports of hippo were suspended from Mozambique in September 2012 (CITES Notification to the Parties No. 2012/057) but the suspension was lifted and is no longer in effect.
There is no problem with importing them to the United States, beyond the normal requirements for a CITES appendix II specimen. "
