I dunno, RET. You pitched one over my head the other day, too.
Maybe you gotta work on your delivery a bit. Maybe start small. Say, a local homeless shelter?

Know any good Iraq jokes?

Oh, btw, Mary Ann. Lower maintenance. Though I saw her on an infomercial a couple years ago. The years have not been kind.

Too much coconut cream pie before she got off the island, I guess.

Russell E. TaylorFirst off and most importantly: "Ginger!"
Now that I've got that out of the way... let me submit the following for your consideration.
A .416 Remington Magnum rifle, going in harm's way for Cape buffalo. The rifle shoots both 370-grain North Fork bullets and 400-grain Barnes "X" bullets more accurately than should be legal for a big-bore.
Given the "soft/solid" thread on this forum, I ask:
Which load: Barnes
OR North Fork?
"Fight! Fight! Lucy and Snoopy are having a fight!" Russ

RET...First and most importantly,ie Ginger/Mary Ann.
You are stuck on an Island with a fat old man,a stick
of a geek,a nerd,and an old man.
You can have BOTH!!!
I'll let those with been there done that experience
answer on your NF/Barnes quandary .
25 June 2004, 01:56
NickuduI believe the "X" to be the best choice in an expanding bullet for the taking of cape buffalo.
25 June 2004, 02:18
retreeverRussell,
I have the same dilema...My 458 Lott new Ruger rifle is shooting both 450X and 450 North Forks in one hole on the paper at 75yds. I have decided to shoot both and follow up with 2 solids as backups in 500gr.

Bill CHow fast is the NF load?
I shot a buffalo last year w/the 370gr out of a .416Rem at/about 2480fps. High side shoulder shot at ~30-yards, shock was such that the bull was at least temporarily paralyzed; bullet did not exit; recovered in that perfect NF-mushroom. IMVHO, the NF opens fast and hard, and is great if backed-up w/solids for the potential going-away shots. The faster they are loaded, the more the NF's penetrate (per Mike Brady). I'll be using the 450gr in Sept on buffalo (hopefully) out of a LOTT, backed by Woodleigh solids likely.
From other's posts, the X is more apt to penetrate farther, and perhaps exit on a side shoulder like a solid (which may or may not be preferable depending on hunting conditions). I shot two buffalo w/a 300gr X from a .375 at ~20 and ~200 yards, and they also did the job. No bad decision here.
Oh yea, Ginger...then MaryAnn.

I believe we will see Nickudu's face in Barnes and Swainson ads for the rest of our lives and is therefore prejudicial to an objective opinion.

Hmmmm... I haven't chronographed it yet. (Note to self: Chronograph .416 Remington Magnum loads.) The last time I did chrono work with this gun was for 400-grain Hornady RNs, which I haven't shot for a while.
The load for the North Forks consists of 81 grains of RL-15 over a Federal 215M primer.
The load for the Barnes "X" consists of 75 grains of IMR 4064, same primer.
Your guesses as to velocity would be as good as mine at this point, with a 22.5-inch barrel.
Remember guys, you have to pick ONE bullet to use.
Mary Ann was a pygmy and too nice. I'm 6'5" and prefer tall, classy sluts. Definitely, Ginger.
Russ
I am not familiar with the Northfork bullet, but assure you that the Barnes X works great for buffalo.
Regarding the accuracy of big bore rifles.
I built a 416 Rigby Improved, and my first load was with the 400 grain Bear Claw bullets.
I fired three shots - with a 1.5-5X Leupold scope.
When I looked through the spotting scope and saw how they shot, I took the same cases, resized them and loaded them with same load and 400 grain Barnes Super Solids.
I fired them at the same target.
This is the target with 6 shots. About 0.77 of an inch.
I stopped my load development right there.
I took ii to Africa, and shot 2 elephants, two lions and 8 buffalos.
I've had several large bore rifles that shot one ragged hole groups.

Russell E. TaylorVery impressive, Saeed!!!
Looks a lot like what I get with the "X" out of my gun.
While I'm normally one to have a backup gun when I travel for hunting trips, I've been considering just using my .416 Remington Magnum for everything next year. I've noted several of your posts about using just one gun and it's gotten me to thinking that it might be the way for me to go. Still not sure, yet.

DB BillR.E.T. --- haven't you ever heard the expression "I've just got time for a short one".

I think that fits MaryAnn.
Also, I think Ginger and MaryAnn qualify as "a PAIR and a spare.

Terry BlauwkampSo where is the Leupold - Burris question in here?
Ginger! and listen to Saeed. jorge

So where is the Leupold - Burris question in here?
Well, um... ya see, Terry... um... see, it's just a "funny" thing. You know how guys are always arguing over what scope is "better" (I hate "better" questions), Leupold or Burris? And how it goes baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack and forth, baaaaaaaaaaaaack and forth, about the quality of the optics, or the LIFETIME WARRANTY (puh-lease, spare me), or the brightness, or the ability to withstand recoil, and so on and so forth. You know, how the "better" question never really gets answered because people can't agree.
Which scope? Which castaway? You know. Humor, Terry... "ar-ar."
OKAY, THAT'S IT. TERRY DIDN'T GET IT. GAME OVER. TURN OUT THE LIGHTS. BRING OUT THE BULLDOZERS AND TURN THIS THREAD INTO A PARKING LOT. THAT'S IT. FOLD UP THE CHECKER BOARD AND GO HOME.

Of course, if she had been, then that would have meant that a guy could possibly have a... oh, nevermind.
Anyway, there's never been any "Raquel Welch or ?????" choices out there in the world like Ginger or Mary Ann, Leupold or Burris, Starsky or Hutch, Whale Ca-Ca or John Kerry, et cetera. If you want to start a new Raquel Welch-related choice, hey, I'm all for it!

I didn't know there was any difference between Whale Ca-Ca and John Kerry.
Which one, Raquel Welch or Joey Heatherton?

Raquel Welch or Bridgette Bardot?
As for Bardot something to be said for the pyscho ones.

For bullets Woodleigh!
PS But was Ginger a natural "Ginger"?
25 June 2004, 19:19
GatehouseI pick Ginger. She always seemed a bit of a nasty girl

And I'd pick Raquel, too. BB is nice (except her politics) but RW always seemed like a gal that you could melt into...
And I'm only 36

Hell, John, I just had Lasik, so I'm not even natural. Speaking of natural, I understand "The Stepford Wives" remake is out -- hmmmm, Nicole Kidman, Faith Hill... hmmmm. "Cyborg" or "natural?"
Tough call.
(I think I'm leaning toward the North Forks at this point.)

Yeah but she is 60 plus years old. Seen Tina Louise (Ginger) lately? Looks like 12 miles of bad road. But...in the island days, Ginger all the way. We had this discussion last summer with several couples. All our wives assumed we'd go for sweet little Mary Ann and to a man Ginger in the slinky sequinned gown was it. Oh, and Ann Margret over Raquel, Ursula, BB, or Ginger. Oh yeah, Barnes X.

Of course everybody's choice in women is up to them, but you do realize that you picked three women who could seriously kick your ass (or mine for that matter).
Oh,wait, I get it... Muletrain has been a naughty boy and needs a spanking...
Now -
Mary Ann - if you ever had a corn fed farm gal, you wouldn't even bother to ask...
And in the morning she'd cook you one hell of a good breakfast. Besides, Ginger was just a cheap gold digger.
Ann Margret - sexiest eyes and smile this side of Sweden
Raquel - Why? Well, she's gorgeous of course, but mostly because, like Mt. Everest, it's there!
Bridget Bardotte - nice eye makeup but two words - Fr-rench! "Mon cheri, is zees ze month I take my bath?"

Yes, of course they could kick my ass and any body elses ass. That is one of the attributes that make them effective private investigators. They are also totally loyal. Except for Xena. She ocasionally likes to play around with my secretary, Mary Ann.
