How much ammo can one take into mozambique? I have heard both 40 and 60 rounds per rifle. Thanks, Bob

I saw the same inconsistencies asked my outfitter's office who said it was 60. We're booked with Mark and Glen Haldane's Zambeze Delta Safaris.

The official law published in the government gazette states you can bring in one rifle, one shotgun, one self defense handgun up to 32cal for this you can bring in 500 shotgun shells, 200 rifle ammunition and 50 rounds for the handgun

We working with the minister of interior and they okay that you can bring up to 4 guns but no military style guns, (M16,M14,G3,etc plus they don’t want any type of folding stock shotguns (combat) for hunting

You can, on application, bring Hunting handguns in bigger caliber, and any reasonable amount of ammo for the purpose of hunting just don’t bring more as of your import permit list you might have to pay import duty on larger amount of ammo but generally 40 to 60 rounds per gun is not a problem depending which port of entry you have!

You didn't mention what you will be hunting, but 20 solids is a little overkill. Unless you are hunting ele or several Buff, 10 solids would most likely mean you will bring back half or more.

Last September three of us took 2 Buff, 2 Sable, 2 Hippo, Croc,
Warthog, Babboons and a Leopard and shot a total of 3 solids between us.

I would also take a lot more than 20 softs if it were me.

I've brought 2 rifles to Mozambique as have my clients. Both outfits I work with state 40 rounds per rifle. This keeps the ammo tax at a reasonable level and weight down.

I totaly agree with Larry that 20 solids is way overkill. I honestly think you only need solids in Mozambique for suni and duikers or for hippo on land unless you plan on hunting elephant. Personally I believe you'd be much better off taking almost all expanding bullets. If your hunting your buffalo on the Delta you have to be particularly careful of overpenetration as you more than likely will be shooting into herds. A pass through could easily wound another buffalo and then your in a mess.

Laws are made by civil servants with no knowledge of the subject in this case approved without consulting the public or the private sector now we got a law which is totally unworkable but the good news that to any law a special permission can be granted by the Minister! On this base we get the import permits since 2007.

you got an legal import permit whatever is on it you can bring!

I'm with Mark. Though there is a lot of game in Moz, you'd have to be a terrible shot to use up much more than 20 rounds unless your rifles are completely knocked out of alignment. Only on the rarest of occasions have I needed more than one shot for each animal so I just always figure two rounds per plus five to check the sights. And that's not because I'm some fantastic shot, either. Getting close has never been a problem there.

In 2008 we were allowed 60 rounds per rifle. Customs in Beira did not open the ammo boxes but did appear to note that we were each carrying 3 boxes of twenty. Mozambique did not have an ammo tax at that time and, to the best of my knowledge, still does not have one.

I brought 40 softs and 20 solids and had plenty left over.

DBird...Mark and Glen know the rules, take their advice and have a great hunt!
