Anybody seen these videos? They look pretty good. The shot on the leopard at 40 seconds on the you tube is pretty cool.

Pretty good DVD. Mark Buchannon uses several Vintage double rifles from 375 Flanged to 600 NE to take a variety of game animals.

Barry Styles of Buffalo Range Safaris is the PH in most of the footage. Has a good sequence of charging cow Elephant and a big Cape Buffalo.

Looks Ok, but did you notice at 54 seconds when he is shooting the buffalo, as soon as he shoots his scond shot he runs away to the right before he even sees his shot reaction and then at 1:16 he is holding a single shot when someone off camera shoots the buffalo

I enjoyed it.

I too wonder what was going on with the scene where he "created a little distance" but in the slow motion segment it sounds like 3 shots went off so maybe(?)he just got off to the side and joined back in.

Actually one the things I admired was that they did not edit the bad out.

I also liked Marks techique with a double. That second shot is always right behind the first.

Even better than this video - in my mind anyway - is Marks wild hog video "Boared to Death".

Clem Coetsee and his brother (still in SA) cout fire 8 rounds from a double before any man could get 5 out of a bolt action (and yes, the bolt action rifles held 5 in the mag!)

One of the training films I took in parks have Clem on film dropping 8 ele in 14 seconds. He was alot better than I will ever be

I got Ken worsley dropping three bulls with a bolt action F.N. .458 in under 5 seconds...but those who know Ken (like 465) will know he is one fast man with a rifle or a pistol.

Astounding. Not so long ago, I had a very interesting discussion with a tracker who worked with Clem. What stories he had to tell.

I have seen it and liked it. But I like anything about Africa hunting...

I also own the sequel, "Bolted to Death". My favorite part of it was that most of the hunting was done with the caliber of my "big" rifle.....the .416 Rigby.

My name is Mark Buchanan and the owner of Big Bore Productions. I would like to introduce myself by making my first post. I have been lurking since 2005 and figured I better figure out how to start posting.

I am a banker during the day, and the videos are a second job for me. I am NOT or pretend to be a worldwide authority on hunting or hunting rifles. I DO not make HOW TO videos. I enjoy making hunting videos that document the hunting experiences of a NON professional hunter.

I truly enjoy hunting with heavy caliber open sighted rifles. This combined with trying to capture the events on video add to the challenge.

Now, to answer the address why I ran in the video during the buffalo charge as mentioned above. I was scared!!! This was in 2003 and was my fifth buffalo and 2nd with a double. I was shooting my Francotte .470 and at the time believed a .470 would drop anything even if it was nicked. So try to imagine my fright as the buffalo turned and gave me that look after I sent the second 500 grain death pill his way.

Fortunately I presented my buddy and PH Barry Style with a Searcy .470 as a gift on this trip. I had no idea what a great idea this was. When the buffalo charged, Barry was standing behind and to my left. So after I fired both rounds I was feeling a little naked and ran about 10 feet to the right to allow Barry to shoot and give me time to reload, thinking the buffalo could not take us both out in one charge.

The truth is I was scared and surprised, but left this part in, because it was real and that’s the way it happened.

I look forward to being an active member. I know many of you, and would be happy to meet you if you are in Reno next week.

Welcome, Mark! Glad you defended yourself and I hope your fellow hunt video producers will PM you in case of attack. I LOVE the fact that I can purchase a vicarious adventure or two for 40 bucks a throw. In fact, as soon as Outdoor Visions ships me the Rift Valley (Ethiopia) DVD my Christmas will be complete. I knew your PH was doing some of the shooting, but of course I watched the whole thing on my own non-YouTube full length version purchased long ago (VCR).

Thank you for taking me to Africa! I grew up in Ethiopia with a slingshot and RSA is all I have been able to afford to try and address my safari needs with firepower instead of rocks. I have been able to "hunt" Ethiopia with a few of y'all, but Mr. Watts is making me wait. :-)

I admire the fact that you tell and show it as it was. The real deal and my kind of hunting story/video. Once, after a fairly hair-raising situation, I confessed to my mentor Roger Whittall that I had been most fearful. His reaction was "If you are not scared in that type of situation, you are stupid. And it is that fear which will give you the edge and keep you alive."

Yes, I have seen his videos and just the double rifles are terrific. I have had occasion to watch many videos as I was getting some treadmill work in anticipation of an upcoming hunt. His videos are always high on my list of repeat performances.

If that's the hunt where the young bull saw you and then the skirmish line of cows came after you, I can recommend that dvd to everyone for an exciting elephant charge and some good shooting by Barry. The cow was very close. I'm pretty sure I have all your dvds and enjoy them. Lots of rifle envy though; you have some nice firearms. See you in Reno.

Your post was something of a surprise; in a sport where egos often reign supreme and even the most novice dangerous game hunters see themselves as the reincarnation of Philip Percival (or in my case, Ian Nyschens), it's refreshing to see such an admirable display of honesty.

(And while AR board decorum frowns on such gestures of vulnerability, I'll now admit to having been afraid once on a safari trip: For almost an hour I was led to believe that I would be sitting in a center seat on the South African Airlines flight from Dulles to Joburg. Not a small amount heartfelt panic, whining, and public emotion eventually saw me to my salvation. Perhaps your example will serve as a catalyst for greater candor from others in AR.)

I have always ranked Big Bore Productions as among the best in hunting videos (the others being: Craig Boddington, Bwana Moja, and Buzz Charlton). Your post just reinforces my favorable view of your work. [Note to fellow AR members: Mark's 'Death by Double Rifle' is one of the best safari videos of all time; you definitely should get a copy.] By the way, a lot of us are looking forward to your most recent videos: 'Death in the Mumbwa' and 'Death on the Savannah' - unfortunately they weren't available at DSC. When can we expect to see them on dealer's shelves?

Re-watched parts of the DVD last night after reading this thread yesterday. Always interesting to see how the game reacts to a large-bore double, and to be reminded how many shots it can take to sort out a buffalo once he has got the wind up.

You dont need to be fast, just smooth.

Down in Houston, Texas last October, we had a timed fourshot contest on an 8" target at 25 yds. You started with the double rifle loaded, safety on. The time starts when your first shot is fired, and stops when the last of the four are fired. then the target is scored. If all shots hit the 10 ring the most you can score is 40 points. I fired all four in 4 seconds flat and scored 36 of a posible 40 points, and three people beat me. I was shooting a rifle with an auto safety, and forgot it and tried to fire my third shot with the safety on. That extra second may have cost me my life if I had been trying to stop a lion. It does no good to be fast if the bullets don't go where they belong, but you would be surely suprised to watch a guy who handles a double well! By the way that rifle no longer has a auto safety.

Thanks to you and the rest for the positive feedback, I have been walking around for two days with my bullet proof vest on!!!

Would love to stop by your booth as long as you do not laugh when I when I whip out pics of my 37 incher. (I usually don’t bring it to the show, hard to pack around)

Speaking of which I read your thread about the LD vs. Nyala. Tough choice, both are challenging to hunt, both are rewarding trophies. However you need to subject yourself to the thrills of a bongo hunt before you can truly answer the question of which is the greatest spiral horn.

I am heading to Cameroon in April, why don’t you come with me, I bet all your fans would love to see you shoot the new #2 bongo!!

Maybe we could do a video together “Mark(c)ed to Death” in the forest…

Mark: I'm planning on doing the Bongo. That's on the priority list for Reno. Not shooting it from a mashon though, and prefer that dogs not be involved.

zhaba, Mark can add more but Barry is fine. I saw both Styles at Reno and went to their Rhino Conservency gathering. Mark was there as well. They were also booking well it appeared at the show. As to concesions, etc. I just do not know. Here is Barrys email address or the general one for Buffalo Range. Hope this helps.

Ganyana - I have never met Clem or his brother - however I have heard plenty of good things (from my Rhody/Zim buddies) about the Coetzee's during their time in "Rhodesia".
They were the exception - rather than the rule - when it came to doubles.
I am lead to believe that very few modern day double rifle shooters would be able to walk in their shadow !!
