Just curious guys. If the longest horn for RW measured 19.5" ,and assuming the other went 19", you will end up with a top SCI score of 38.5"

Just checked on SCI records top Common Reedbuck measured 35 and 1/8", so this boet will be be better by about 15".

As I said, just curious......

Cheers

Thanks 375 fanatic. Yep once you see it you realise how big it is. Proof again that there are still some giants out there. Wonder what the greenies will say know, they believe that the hunters had shot out all the big trophies.

Yet another example why you must register your trophies, to keep an accurate record of what is still available out in the bush.

Thanks Lowveld hunters for keeping trophy hunting alive.

SCI measurement method for most animals with simple horns (including reedbucks) is method 1, which states 'Measure the length of each horn on it's front surface from the base of the horn to the tip and keep parallel to the hairlike grain of the horn material'. It then goes onto say, that you measure the circumferance of the hard horn at the base. Then you total the lengths and circumferances of the two horns to get to the final score. In SCI you do not include the basal pulps in the measurements.

In Rowland Ward, you rank on the length of the longest horn, taken in the same way, but including the basal pulp.

Hope that helps.

The best part of this story is that the guy who shot it was given a Buck to shoot as a present he saw this reedbuck and phoned the farm owner and said hes got a 20" in the scope. the farmer owner thought he was joking and said if thats the Case he will pay for the taxidermy aswell.

it measured wet over 20" so the farm owner paid for the buck and the mount. and apparently there is still 2 more of the similar size on the farm

Isn't it true that luck plays a big role in hunting? You are either lucky or not. It should be about the hunt and not only about the inches.
Well done Wentzel clap

Jaco,

I quite agree with you, it should be about the hunt and not about mere inches..... but sadly, there are a very few out there who don't care a fig about the hunting experience etc and only care about inches and the record book.

Ah well, I guess we all have our own reasons for hunting.

Rudi, very big and good looking reedbuck. The SCI score however doesnt add up here is why, a direct copy of the measurement manual from SCI.

With reedbuck (all species): (Method 1-b)
(1) Measure only hard, black horn. The softer pulpy material at the base of the horns (which is incipient or green horn that can boil away) must not be included in the measurement.
(2) Measure and record both length and circumference, altough (since 1991) only the lengths will count the score. The circumference measurements are for supplemental information only.

So lets say both horns have equal lengths the top SCI score for the specific reedbuck would add up to 39 which is very big as far as I know the no. 1 in SCI is around 35. But then again the trophy can only be entered for SCI if the hunter is a member of SCI.

That is an incredible reedbuck, and I have to believe there is a story to the genetics of that animal.

I don't mean trickery, I just mean how the genes ended up in that particular animal to produce such an amazing trophy.

I doubt that we will ever know (and to be clear I don't think that humans had anything to do with it), but damn....wish I had seen him!

Steve,
There is a reason why I was hinting that you were on the wrong track.......I just did not want to scream it out to loud. See Frederik's post above for the RIGHT measuring method of Mountain reedbuck for SCI. You only measure the lenght of the horns, the circumference is for ref. purposes ONLY.

Do not worry Steve, it changed in 1991, and that is a LOOONG time ago...I believe when you took your PH exam, it was still the old measuring system. The sad thing is, that there are people that will only hunt for this score, and this information MIGHT be misleading. you as an advocate of "giving only the right info" on this forum, should be able to agree.

Rudi-I hope the lads at Lowveld have this squared away, and corrected the SCI scoring of this animal, if they wanted to enter it as the new SCI nr.1 and if the hunter was registered with SCI.

IT is a dandy though, and I have a friend farming in that area.....I'm going to try and find out where these animals are hidden away...... Big Grin

Thanks for posting this animal.....it is very special

We dont care about sci and none of us is members of sci it was just a matter of interest to see where it would rank with sci but even at 38.5" it looks as if it would still be nr1 . Our competion is judged on Rowland Ward

It's about a hundred and fifty years Eeker since I did my SCI measurers course and I can only assume that whoever measured the trophy measured it the same way as I was taught. - I don't think that measurement was taken for the book though, just for the LHA get together.

I've gotta say, I haven'r done an SCI measurement for many years as I don't often hunt with 'inch hunters'....... might be time I bought myself a new SCI book........ then again, naaaaaah Wink jumping
