Just curious how many have or have considered volunteering for a month or so with an anti poaching team. I have a friend who just finished four months in Cameroon. It was tough on him. He got malaria, dysentery and was shot at. You have to be in good physical shape and prior military training is necessary for some teams.

I managed a whole three days with DAPU in Dande. I didn't get malaria, dysentery or get shot at, but did get some nasty foot blisters. I will eventually get around to writing about it as part of a hunt report.

Write a check maybe but to go looking for bad guys who carry AK-47s...I don't think so. Actually, the more I think about it, the dumber it seems.

Tell that two the thousands of people that go out day and night on patrol. I call them brave and courageous not dumb!

It's their job in their home country. That's a completely different situation than you asked about. Personally, I try to keep my inner Walter Mitty in check.

It could be a form of safari I guess - but African poachers don't fit into the first world mould - they're heavy hitters and you would need to level of fitness and training to be an asset. It's all well and good until the first volunteer dies. But worth doing? Yeah, maybe.The best bet would probably be the International Anti-Poaching Foundation. Think Damien Mander is doing talks in the States now.

many people have received bravery awards despite their actions being considered very stupid.

One must weigh up what their life is worth (vs) what the risks/rewards are.

malaria?...so he went to Cameroon unprepared for the environment.

dysentry?.....so he consumed some contimated water or food
or he may have even shook hands with someone who had traces of infected faeces.

Most legitimate volunteer gigs are in supportive roles, which is as it should be. And BTW, in terms of Roman Dutch law - you're not in the 'States - you are not innocent until proven guilty.

Except it is not and I doubt that there is a country in Africa which would allow this sort of nonsense.

And that's why I said what I said....

We all remember what happened with GEOFFRY DE GENTILE ,he shot a poacher in combat ,they attacked Mayo Oldiri camp and he was forced to leave the country ,loosing everything .He was guilty before trial and all the police was involved in the poaching ring .
Saying this i would volunteer ,i seved some time in argentine army scouts and im an ex military surgeon so i believe i an help as an advisor and medical officer ,but we must recognize that WE ARE IN HOSTILE TERRITORY .
