I'm heading to Uganda later this week after Nile buff and plains game. Any things that I should not miss while I'm there?

With enough practise you should not miss anything.

I hunted Uganda a few years ago. Which areas are you hunting? I’m hunting Karamoja again next year with an old Army buddy?

Doc, I would defiantly plan a day trip to Murchison Falls, its gorgeous and you might even hook a big Nile Perch along the way.
Keep an eye out for the baboons at the ferry landing, they are very cheeky!
We stopped by and had a late lunch at the Masindi Hotel on the way back from fishing. Hemingway, Bogart and Hepburn were guest back in the day. The hotel bar is named Hemingway's and there's lots of memorabilia.

The late Joshka's son who parted company with the concession which was taken over by the Vincent family, preferred a fishing lodge at Murchison Falls over hunting.

At the time he seemed committed to investing his share of the selling price but am not sure if his dream materialized.

I will echo what bwanajay said, we hunted together with UWS. Murchison Falls and MF National Park are not to be missed if you are close. We were, right across the highway in Aswa Lolim. Nile perch fishing is a great break from chasing big game. And the drive to Bwindi to see the chimp rehabilitation center would be cool. And definitely Masindi and the hotel Hemingway recovered in after his plane crash. Uganda is a wonderful safari destination. Enjoy!

I’m doing the UWS Sitatunga/buffalo hunt, so we are in 3 different areas. I know the Hemingway bar and Karamoja are on the docket, and we are covering the southwest, northwest, and northeast in Uganda.

Andrew, I’d love to say I’ve practiced enough, but with a couple feet of snow and -40 or lower windchill I have not been too diligent with practice... I guess I will just have to get closer!

Definitely spend a half day fishing at Murchison Falls. Caught one Nile Perch and then hooked up on another that we fought for about 45 minutes until it broke the surface and saw that it was about a 7 or 8 foot croc. Lots of wildlife to see along the banks.

Idi Amin’s deserted lodge is in Kidepo. Not sure where your staying in Aswa Lolim but Bwana Tembo Safari Camp was excellent, some of the best Italian food i’ve Ever eaten.

You’ll have a great time.

If your going from Aswa Lolim to Kidepo by car plan on a long day.

We did this 3x3 last March (second half). All in all, it is an easy safari. Russ and others accurately identified the must see and must dos along the way. By March, it's getting to the time of year that fishing is made difficult by the current, especially if you've had some rains.

My personal recommendations are:

1. Take your time. There is an exceptional amount of game to choose from and you can shoot incredible trophies if you take your time and are very selective. I remember the day we decided to concentrate on EA Bushbuck. We looked at more than 40 rams before I shot one north of 17 inches. Before we returned to camp, we saw another 5 rams. I was a little too cute with my sitatunga, passing on a very nice bull late in the hunt. I got bailed out with a last day bull, but it easily could have gone the other way. From the reports in the last two years, I'd shoot any mature sitatunga bull you see. In fact, I hear reports that guys are struggling some now with very high water.

2. Take a good camera. This is one of the few places where you can take "national park" photos while hunting. You will have numerous opportunities to photograph or video dugga boys, elephants, and plains game. Don't miss those opportunities.

3. Take your water shoes. I was glad to have a pair of Converse All Stars I previously wore bongo hunting. You will have wet feet daily in the Sitatunga area. UWS recommends rubber boots or waders, but I didn't want to pack that heavy.

4. Karamoja is open. You can shoot far there. I had a couple of 200 yard pokes as well as a Reedbuck at 330. Buff shots can be 100 as well, though mine were 40 and 70 with the two pipe.

5. No need for a sat phone. There's ample signal everywhere and wifi in the UWS camps. No need to lug the sat phone.

6. Prepare to drive. Unless you charter, the drive to Karamojo is far. Take something to watch or read.

7. Sunscreen. The sun is very bright. Cover up or lather up.

8. Palm Sunday and Easter. If you are there for either, be aware of what's going on around you. Uganda has been the beneficiary of much Christian mission work and it shows on these days. I was driving from Murchison to the sitatunga area on Palm Sunday. It was a treat to see the locals out in force, palms in hand, walking the roads to church that morning. For me, it was a highlight.

9. Food and tents are good to very good. I recall the sitatunga camp was a little more comfortable than the Karamoja camp. Where you shoot the Nile Kob (beside Murchison) is basically a guest lodge.

10. Christian Weth is a good oke and fun to be around. He runs a good operation and wants to make sure you have a good safari.

You are are the adventure type rafting on the Nile in Jinja is a ton of fun. Class 4s and 5s.

Uganda is a great hunting destination. I’ve hunted both Nile and Cape Buffalo along with other plains game. I hunted with Uganda Wildlife Safaris and highly recommend them. PM me if you have questions.

Kidepo is home to the largest single herd of buffalo in Africa...I have been told.

Saw thousands while there. Also saw plenty of ele. Saw the largest herd of cow ele I have ever seen in the Karamoja North. It went on continuously for miles.
