29.5" Nyala taken in Zulaland
A client of ours just took a 29.5" Nyala in Zululand. Pics when available. Last year, a 29" Nyala was taken on the same property, and each year several in excess of 27" are taken. The new world record, taken by a woman a couple of years ago, was taken on an adjoining property. I personally saw 29-30" Nyala two years ago, unfortunately while hunting bushbuck, having taken a 27.5" trophy the day before.

This reflects on the owner's commitment to ethical hunting and fair chase, combined with very careful management of game densities.

For those who are not familiar with Nyala, a 29" Nyala is the equivalent of a 60" Kudu in terms of statistical probability.

We get $1750 for these big Nyala. Dailies are $300. Discount for the "little ones" less than 28". Also have good Red Duiker and the other normal stuff.

Russ, if this was from Marks place it's just another example of his commitment to big nyala. Remember too mine was over 30" last year. He does have the best Nyala and some of the best hunting and management of anyplace I have ever been.

Sometimes we just have dumb luck. The second animial I took in Africa was a 29 1/2 Nyala in Natal near Hulhulwe. Big Grin

Photo of the 29.5" Nyala, taken by Jim Ginther, is posted here. Jim writes "I know that the nyala will be the greatest trophy animal I ever take and one of which I am very proud; as much as for how much we worked for it as for its horns." He is referring to Mark Sutherland's (the PH and owner of this property) rule that requires all hunting to be done on foot.

I huted with Mark in 2004 and while at lunch one day a 30"+ (according to the PH) came in to water at the watering hole just below the camp in a dry river bed. Of course I didn't have my camera because it was the truck and when I got back he was too far away to get a good picture. Just to think at one time I was about 50 yards away from that guy. We hunted for him over the next couple of days but we never came across him and I settled for one on the last day much smaller then ones I passed throughout the week.
