Selous Hunting Blocks
Does anyone have any idea where one can get (preferably electronically) a decent map of the Selous Game Reserve showing all of the subdivided hunting blocks, and--how's this for asking the impossible--showing which outfitters now hold the hunting rights to which blocks?

Thanks.

Sounds like a job only T. Carr could complete!

Yeah, maybe Terry knows. I think one problem would be that the operators breakup there own areas to others, so it would seem a real nightmare to detail every PH.

mrlexma,

I have a map of the Selous concessions (its quality is not very good; it is a fax of a fax of a fax). It doesn't have the concession owners.

A few years ago a very good map was done of the Selous by the Germans (or the Swiss). I contacted a government official in Dar for a copy, but he said it was never published (or that it is no longer in print) and the computer file of the map would take forever to download.

I do have a 28 page Adobe Acrobat document of a 1999 study of the Selous by a German. It has several smaller maps with game density, etc.

If you want a copy of the map or the Acrobat file let me know.

Regards,

Terry

Terry, yes, I am interested in anything I can get at this point.

I would be grateful if you would fax me (or email me, if possible) the fax of the fax of the fax (I'll email you my fax number) and email me the Adobe file. Thanks very much.

I have one around here somewhere if I can find it...a short search didn't come up with it, but I will do an extensive search tomorrow...It has all the blocks and their numbers but not the owners as that is confidential in some cases....You probably cannot get that information, but I know most of the block owners if you have a specific block in mind then I may know who owns it and remember that is a constantly changing thing for the most part....

Another article on the Selous.

PDF Article on the Selous

Here's and interesting quote form the article:

"There are presently no competitive bidding procedures in place, but instead a committee distributes the hunting blocks. Blocks cost a flat fee of US$ 7,500 per year although some are sub-let for much higher amounts, indicating their true market value."

In my view there is something seriously wrong with the way the hunting blocks are allocated. Why not auction them off to the highest bidder? [I'll answer my own question. Less chance for nepotism, cronyism and bribery.]

Regards,

Terry

P.S.

I swear, I remember recently reading something about a safari company in TNZ that controls about one-half of the hunting blocks in the Selous. I can't seem to put my finger on that reference or the name of the company.

It's as though we were asking for the keys to the Tower of London, n'est ce pas?

This info seems to be more secret than Osama's address.

I know the family with rights to nearly half the Selous. That is, in part, why I want further info.

Thanks again.

If you want a block in The Selous or in Tanzania for that matter then you had better come up with $200,000 and that will not be the best block...The best would surly cost you $500,000. but the problem is you can't even find a good one if you want it...The alleged $7500 per block is only half of that story, takes another half a million to get chosen!

I doubt if any American sentiment or ideolgy will ever change that, so why bother....A little knowledge is a dangerous thing...

I actually do have a list of all the Selous hunting blocks and who has the government lease to those blocks. Now who some of them sub-let to I do not know, but I do have the list of the companies that have been allocated blocks in the Selous. As of now Pasanisi has the most hunting blocks in Southern Selous. If none of you know, the blocks in Tanzania are at present being re-allocated to companies until 2009. Most of the legit companies have had their areas re-allocated and some are still on the line due to over due taxes and trophy fees, but the majority of the companies already have their letters to extend until 2009. others are in trouble and do not know if they will keep their blocks and only time will tell in the next couple of months. So, those of you hunting in Tanzania in 2004 and/or 2005, check with your company to make sure they will have the area you have booked in! Some of these guys from South who are sub-leasing do not have a clue and may be booking hunts in an area that they may not have if they are dealing with a bad company.

Bwanamich,

You typed an incorrect email address "hoitmail", but I caught that.

So I sent the document to your email address in your profile.

I just got the message returned.

Please let me know if the address in your profile is correct. It takes forever for me to send the document because I am on dial up connection.

Hi,
Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know if the blocks in Zimbabwe etc are priced as high? Is this the reason for the exorbitant fees (+ taxes on everything)?
