Ideas for warthog taxidermy?
I would like some other ideas for a warthog mount. My hog has an SCI score of 34 inches and I would like to do something with him. I have seen the traditional straight on shoulder mount but was wondering if anyone on this forum might be able to suggest something different.

AtkinsonI have my big warthog, (173/4 x181/4) on my web page under big 5 Safaris BTW, as a bleached skull on a plaque...I personally like it better than a mounted head on hogs, as they are certainly not a thing of beauty, however thats just my personal opinnion...

fredj338I'll go w/ Ray on this one. I want to take a couple this fall on my buff. trip in Moz. I think they are too ugly to shoulder mount but they make a great looking Euro mount or a skull on a table top mount would also look great.

What about a pedestal mount with a soft back light and the pedestal in the corner of the room? (I always thought boar heads were impressive and it was a disappointment for me on my only trip to Africa that I never saw a warthog that was worth shooting for a trophy) Don't be too dismissive of a shoulder mount, either. Your warthog would really catch anyone's attention. I read Ray Atkinson's post about the skull with interest. My outfitter was a European Italian, long resident in Africa and with a largely European clientele.(He told me I was his first American) I gathered that many Europeans followed the "skull" route. In fact, the camp had numerous skulls around and I was impressed. (I always enjoy showing a picture of a hyena skull to people - and they never guess right) If you're like me, however, you want hair and eyes and some connection to the live beast. Why not examine a copy of the SCI magazine and contact one of the big taxidermy advertisers and get some ideas? They may even be able to show you an actual picture of what they have in mind.

BIG SAMRon,
Our taxidermist showed me a new form that has recently been put out my McKenzie (sp?) for wart hogs. True, in the past there hasn't been much one could do with these. But on this new form there is actually a little more of the shoulder which allows for a slight turn. It gives a better look to the animal.
I am having a plaque made out of buff skin that is in the shape of the continent of Africa to mount my hog on.
I do like them for their unique ugliness. Part of our group has just received their mounts, I hope to have mine with-in a month or so.
Check with your taxidermist and see if they can direct you to some forms and ideas to look at.
All the best in your search.

Can you or someone post a picture of your warthog skull mount?
I have always thought that a warthog was so ugly that it would make a very unique pedestal mount, if done correctly.
Has anyone seen a warthog done on a pedestal?

MuletrainYou could do something like this. Mount the skull and part of the lower jaw on a nice piece of wood.

Or if you have a few extra tusks you could make a coat rack.

Mickey1I like this one, above the Comode.

I am also haveing one made as a full body mount just laying down on the floor, no base.

I don't have a photo so I'll try to explain it . . . Do a 1/2 lifesize mount (front half) which really wouldn't be much larger than a shoulder mount. Put it in a habitat scene that looks like the pig is submerged in mud with only his front half sticking out. With a little effort, a good habitat man (or woman) can make a very convincing mud hole scene.
Just my $ 02.
Good luck!
