fmj solid best velocity
fmj solid best velocity
Hi
At what velocity a fmj solid 300 gr would preform best. it seems when velocity is too high the bullet may deform or bend and if velocity is too low may be it would not penetrate well or enough on elephants head.

yukon deltaI prefer DG bullets to move at 2200-2300 fps approximately. Any more than that is really unnecessary and harder on you without much to show for it. Having said that, it all comes down to bullet design. A proper solid will be stable within a wide range of velocity. I would look at other options for solids besides the FMJ. They have stability problems anyway due to the round nose. Look at some of the monolithic designs like the GS custom flat nosed design. They are stable from about 1600 fps on up to as fast as you can drive them.
Are you using a 375 H&H?

There is no best velocity for a good steel jacketed solid. Just load them up at their 1907 nominal velocity of 2550 fps and quit worrying about it. They've been working at that velocity for a hundred years now.

AtkinsonI'm not as concerned about velocity as I am bullet shape..I like the flat nose solids, particularly the GS Customs design and I usually drive them at the time proven 2400 FPS, give or take a 100 FPS makes little difference IMO....
