Buff Group Size

I've been doing some shooting practice to get ready for my first buff hunt this fall. I've been shooting off hand and off of shooting sticks at 50 yd and off the sticks at 100 yd. Does anyone know the aprox L x W of the heart lung area of a buff. What would be an acceptable group size at these distances. Should I also practice off hand at 100yd. I may use this gun to take a few of the smaller antelope. Should I sight in 2 inches high at 100yd.

I would suggest you invest in "The Perfect Shot" by Kevin Robertson. It is available from Safari Press in hard cover and a smaller field guide. It shows the anatomy of all the major African game. You will be surprised particularly with cats that important organs aren't exactly where you would expct them to be.

I would not hunt buffalo with a rifle that will not do a 10" group or better at 100 yards. That will give me a 1 inch group at 10 yards, which is plenty accurate.

About a foot and a half to two feet should be a good kill zone..depending on how big the bull is.

500 grains - sounds like the grouping for throwing a spear rather than a shot!!

Donato,

The heart of a mature buf is as "big as a womans head " the perfect shot.. I would take an educated bet and say the size is near a 5 gallon pail with the heart in the bottom half...

Retreever, I'am less than minuet of pail now at 100 yd. My groups off the sticks are around 5x5 inches @ 100 yd. This was the first time I've ever shot the 375 off the sticks at 100 yd. I've shot a total of 100 rounds of 375 in my life so far and I know I'll be ready for buff in Sept. I have to thank every one on this site for the good advice I've gotten on shooting big bore rifles for the first time. I enjoy shooting the 375 off the sticks much more than I thought I would. I did have a little fear that it would take me much longer to shoot a 375 well. It's not bad shooting off the bench either, especially with a PAST shooting pad. I plan to shoot a couple of hundred rounds more of 375 before I go. I'll also try to shoot a fast second shot off the sticks at 100 yd and off hand at 50 yd. Thanks again for the good advice I've gotten from this site.

Look at some pics of buff and see where to hit him...See Ph wants you to shoot a soft first and all solids as backups...

5x5 at 100 yds is more than adequate for the kill area on a buff! But keep practicing! It always helps!

With accuracy like that you are no longer trying to see if you can group for buff. Now you practice to make the rifle an extension of you body. Another thousand rounds and I have heard it becomes an extension of you mind. How many does it take to become an extension of your spirit?
