LHeym500And the price on the black market will at least double. Supply and demand. The supply is low and the demand just got more difficult to quench (I know sp).
China and Vietnam do not seem to have the political will or worry to do anything meaningful.
The US has consistently ignored African countries and so they have become cheek to jaw to Asia.
My bet this is for show to get some NGO or international money, but I do not know that.

Yes.
Prices will rise. Demand goes up inexplicably when a resource is banned. Prohibition saw increased prices, increased consumption and some getting rich.(Al Capone, Joe Kennedy) Not a good idea to ban a product unless you are the one with the product. Legalized trade in ivory, on the other hand, would create a legal market and see an increase in elephants and habitat dedicated to elephant. Same with rhino, I believe.

Barry GroulxOne of the big problems as I see it is that the activists are going to hail this as some huge success, not because they really believe it will make any difference but because they can use it to get more people to "Donate now!". The world's media will follow along in full cry like the lemmings they are.
Laws only have an impact on the law-abiding. Legal ivory is inconsequential compared to illegal ivory, so it's obvious this will only exacerbate poaching, raise the black market prices and give guys like Downes and Pacelle the wherewithal to raise their own salaries.
Criminals don't obey laws, QED.
