On my trip with Saeed a couple of years ago I heard them roar for the first time, live, not a doco or a video clip and thought it was one of the coolest moments of the safari.

There is a big cat sanctuary in East Texas and the folks that live around there are quite familiar with the cries and roars of the various cats(African lions, cougars, leopards, etc).

Late one afternoon a few years ago, we took a horse to a vet within earshot of the sanctuary and the roaring was quite clear and unmistakable.
Our horse did not like it and did not calm down until we had her back at the farm.

The addictive sound of wild Africa!
