taking ammo for PH
I'm flying KLM thru Amsterdam onto Dar es Salaam my PH asked if I could bring him a couple boxes of 460 Weatherby ammo. I shoot a 458 WM will I have any trouble carrying these in my gun case without a 460 WBY in tow?

No, you won't have any problems as a rule. I do it all the time and have never had a problem..

One reason is most Dar customs agents don't have a clue about much of anything such as caliber unless you volenteer. Another is you will/should be met by someone who can take care of such minor problems. I once explained away some 500 Jefferys as being able to shoot them in the camp gun, should my gun fail. A lot depends on your approach and attitude, politness and edicate really works in Africa.

Not to say that you won't get a 3rd world ninny that got up on the wrong side of the bed and has a chip on his shoulder, but the worst that could happen IMO is they would seize the ammo, in which case your PH could sort it out at a later date...

Thank you Ray.
I don't mind taking him 2 boxes but at $115.00 per box of 20 I don't want to see them held in Amsterdam cause my transit permit doesn't have them listed.

ALP#4,

If your transit permit and Tanz gun permit does not reflect the 460 ammo you may very well loose it.

Mark: That's what I thought! I assume Ray just took for granted I had it on my Dutch transit permit. I do not as he requested it after I applied.
**speaking of the transit permit, I faxed everything to the number on the form and it's been nearly 3 weeks...how soon should I get nervous? Thanks, Al

My Dutch transit permits has never taken more than two weeks so try to give them a call to see what is happening.

ALP,
They need to be on your dutch transit permit, they need to total less than 11lbs including your ammo and they need to appear on the import permit for Tanzania. If not, you may loose the ammo and get a lot of grief in Amsterdamm. I know a PH friend that was "arrested" in Schiphol for the same thing and had to hire an attorney to represent him in court a few days later. Got off with a hefty fine!

It looks like my PH will be buying his own ammo in Tanzania. Thanks for the advice gentlemen.

I assumed that you would not try to SMUGGLE it into any country...I also assumed that you knew it would have to be a part of your 5 kilo quota, as that is a USA requirement.

Tanzania has a 100 round allowance but they can't count, and I have taken more rounds than that, sometimes I had to pay and other times I did not,in either case it was less than $20.00..

The only thing that I would be carefull about is the Dutch entry, be sure to get it right. Perhap I shoud have added that, but didn't know your routing. If one goes through England then everything should be correct plus, they are waiting for you there.

I have not been checked by the US on rounds that are in my checked luggage although they have cut the locks and gone through the baggage many times, never a question as to overages on ammo. At worst case scenario they would seize the two extra boxes.. Nor have the Tanzania or any other African counties bothered me to any degree other than coming up with a "tax" on the extra ammo...

I have been taking ammo, brass, and bullets to Pierre for some time now, as he shoots a 500 Jefferys and has trouble getting ammo. I have had some questions to answer, but that happens with my 404 shot brass that I bring home.

However if you are new to African travel or feel uncomfortable then I would not do it, its not worth the worry it could cause you.

That is the only trouble I've had as well!

I had a customs man in Lusaka ask me why I was takeing empty brass home! When I told him I reload, he just looked at me as if I were crazy. The concept or reloading completely bypassed his understanding!. When ever I leave, I always leave my still loaded ammo for the PH, unless it is a wildcat round. It seldom is a wildcat in the last 20 yrs! I've never taken in calibers that I didn't have a rifle for as well, however! beer

Ray: I wasn't trying to be a smart ass. I just never flew thru AMS before and not used to the transit permit issues.I guess it really would be smuggling and honestly hadn't thought of it like that
If I had it to do over again I'd steer clear of AMS. But I booked it that way to breakup the flights. As I did the Washington/Joburg/Windhoek flights last year and it was too long for me to attempt it once again this year. Burned me out before I started to hunt.
Thanks to all for the advice. Al
