Alice Landreth Photo
Back in the 70's Alice Landreth shot a huge elephant (140&90lbs) in Tanzania-I believe. I have seen a photo of her with these tusks, but now cant find it in my books. Does anyone know where I can find this photo? Thanks

I am looking at the photo from the book A Treasury of African Hunting. The story is A Great Elephant in Tanzania. The bigger tusk weighed 141, the broken tusk was 91.

I received this book from Sam Pancotto. It would be interesting to see how many women have shot 100 pound elephants. I know Sam's wife Rose shot two and his daughter Marilyn on her honeymoon took one.

If any of the photos are public domain, I would love to see them. A broken tusked bull that still weighed 91 is impressive!

I remember seeing a picture in an old Weatherby catalog (240 Weatherby was brand new in that issue) of the Dutchess of somewhere or other with her 100 lb'er and it went on to mention that this dutchess weighed less than 100 lbs.

There is a book available from www.SafariPress.com, Great Tuskers of Africa.
It chronicles all of Africa's great tuskers, living and dead, poached killed by sport hunters etc...

I intend to get it, as it looks like interesting reference material.

That is a great read! Thanks Nick.

Makes me appreciate my having camped on the Luwegu River all the more, knowing that big ol' tusker lived not all that far downstream. Smiler

Very cool woman too, that Alice Landreth.

Countess Claire d'Acquarone of Verona, Italy with a 100-lb Elephant shot in Kenya with her 460 Wby.

I'll see if I can scan the picture from the Weatherby Guide. Nice elephant and she's a looker too.

If the Countess weighed less than 100 pounds and shot him with a .460 Weatherby, that's as impressive as the taking of the elephant itself!
