NickuduEight Years' Wanderings in Ceylon
Samuel Baker06 December 2004, 16:06
fla3006Excellent reading. Two other good titles on hunting in India by Baker are "The Rifle & Hound In Ceylon" and "Wild Beasts and Their Ways".

NickuduYou must have taken an Evelyn Woods course.

It took me "eight years" to read it. Long-winded fellow, that Sammy.

NickuduBog, Yes Thanks. I had that one listed in the "nickudu files". Pretty good read. I wish we could find more of this on the Internet but "copyrights" are a tough nut to crack, often requiring more time & effort than the actual posting!

fla3006Baker's prose, like many of the early hunter/writers, can be somewhat tedious, formal and wordy. Gordon-Cumming is the worst, Selous bad too, but the adventures and descriptions of the early times make it worth while.

NickuduYes ... all too easy to overlook the fact that the vast majority were secondary authors. With that, some were darn good! The toughest read I've come across was Edouard Foa (After Big Game in Central Africa". That chap saved me a tidy sum on "Sominex"!
