Med Evac provider suggestions?
Does anyone have opinions on or sugggestions of a good Med Evan provider for someone going hunting in Africa from the US?

I subscribe to MedjetAssist. Can't tell you about their service as I have never used them and Damn hope I never do!

Larry,

You will want not only MedjetAssist but also MARS coverage as well (both very affordable). MARS will get you out of the bush and MedjetAssist will provide the jet to get you to the right hospital.

If you are hunting in Tanzania, a MedJet membership includes a membership in The Flying Doctors who will come get you from camp and take you to the hospital.

If you are in Zimbabwe, get a MARS membership as well.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a MedJet membership as the evacuation from camp is usually not financially crippling if you need it (the cost of a normal charter, usually).

Evacuation from Africa to the US is extremely expensive (the cost of a small house ... usually).

What if you are hunting in Namibia?

Don Causey, of The Hunting Report, is no longer recommending MedJetAssist precisely because they cannot promise world wide pick up from the scene of injury/illness. They can in some places, but not in others.

Causey is now recommending Global Rescue. For members requiring hospitalization, Global Rescue provides medical evacuation from anywhere in the world to a hospital of their choice.

Global Rescue charges $329 per year versus $205 per year for MedJetAssist, so it is more expensive, but in my view well worth it.

And, as I understand it, if you are bitten by a black mamba, you will die before they get there (assuming you're more than an hour or so from medical attention.) That's a bit unnerving. I carried a snakebite kit, the one with the suction syringe, while in the Tanzanian bush last fall but I think it was just something to keep us busy while I expired.

Larry,
Just go and enjoy yourself! If something bad happens, you'll probably be dead before you get to a hospital anyway. I think alot of people worry too much about every scenerio possible, and take the fun out of it all.

Great advice.

And Larry, while you're at it, cancel your car insurance, homeowner's insurance, health insurance and life insurance too.

You'll save a bundle and have a lot more fun that way.

Better yet, just bring a trauma team with you just in case!
Larry, my response is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but I hope that you understand what I am saying. I have been to Africa twice (Yes, ONLY Twice!)and I felt that alot of us worry for nothing. Your PH will look after you like a son, and I'm sure he will have evacuation plans anyway.
My point is just relax and enjoy yourself!!

Like Don Causey enjoyed himself on this safari?

Why Med Evac insurance is a good idea.

Not only MedJet/Mars/Flying Doctors, etc. Make sure your personal medical insurance carrier knows where you're going and determine if they actually provide some degree of coverage in countries other than the USA.

I see that Global Rescue also has a 30 day plan for $119.

Amen Jorge,

We used MedJet....Really professional folks to deal with...Didn't need the service, but it was a good feeling to know we could at least have a shot at getting back home should an emergency arise.

Frank, the 30-day plan w/GR is actually $229 for an individual, the "30-days" just means one can travel abroad up to that many days. A 7-day plan is $119. http://www.globalrescue.com/plans.cfm?view=shortterm

The first thing you need to understand is that virtually all US health insurer will not cover you while overseas. You need to buy a policy specifically for that in the event you end up in an African hospital.

I buy them every year for my trips. It isn't very expensive if you purchase for a short period of time. If you want info I will get it in my office tomorrow. It is very simple and can be done over the internet.

As far as being evacuated, make sure whoever you use will come and get you where you are at. It doesn't help much if they will evacuate you from
say Dar es Salaam and you are hundreds of miles away in the middle of no where.

Most of those mentioned by other posters have good reputations.

I wouldn't go without both the foreign health insurance and the evacuation insurance. In the late 80's a friend of mine and I both got hurt while sheep hunting in BC. I got bitten by a horse and my friend broke his heel. Both required surgery. Trust me, it is no fun and all. Consider that Canada is a hell of a lot more civilized and a hell of a lot closer to home than anywhere in Africa.
