What is currently the best method for shipping something of value to RSA?

I�ve sent/received stuff airmail without any problems, if you insure the envelope/package it should work out.

I have used DHL, as I recall it cost me about $120 to send about a one pound item from the West Coast to Pretoria.

It did arrive in timely fashion.

The show season is beginning, and lots of stuff will be hand-carried in both directions (if it is not a rush).

My experience with sending things to RSA has been dissapointing. At one point I had about 1/2 of the items sent vanish from the face of the earth. It did not matter if it was to the Museum in Cape town. Friends in Pretoria or my business in Ellisras. It did not matter if it was a letter or a package. I even had packages that vanished when sending them from Pretoria to Cape town.

I'm now at the stage where I do not send things with normal means. I wait til I have a friend or family carry them back and forth as we travel back and forth from there. It's sad because I know many children living with friends whom I would like to send things to for birthdays or Christmas. It has worked a few times but more often then not there is a very long delay, or it never gets there. The postal system in RSA is a very poorly run and unaccountable system, or so it seems to me.

If I were in a situation where I had to ship something I would use an Express carrier like DHL, UPS, FEDX, etc.

The last thing I sent was a postal express letter with a check for deposit on a special game drive I had arranged for my hunters. They needed it in 2 weeks to hold the dates. I sent the check USPS express delivery which was (I was told) 3 days delivery time, it cost 68 dollars! The check was in the hands of the operator 6 weeks later. At least it got there. I went to the Post office to see about my refund since it was not three days but rather 6 weeks. They said they did their part it was the South African Post Office that delayed it. Our USPS only guarantees the delivery to the country not to the actual address.

That was my last dealing with the USPS to Africa or shipping anything to RSA by any means. I wish you well and as well stated by others,........ GET INSURANCE ON IT!!

I send stuff all the time and I only use FEDEX based on a number of experiences....

Thankyou gentlemen. I knew there was no way it was going to make it through the 2 postal systems. I was looking for recomendations on fedex, dhl etc. I am not concerned about the cost only that it gets there when promised and intact.
