Hammer585 Nyati Short
Understand that the original 585 Nyati was built on a military Mauser.
Recently had a gunsmith look at a Montana long magnum action (375 H&H length) concerning building a 585. We know there is some work involved.
One thing hadn't expected was that the magazine is too short.
Is there more than one 585 Nyati cartridge length ?
Can't see how a military Mauser would be long enough but a 375 H&H length one is not.

BwanaBobThere are two case lengths for the .585 Nyati - the most common is 2.79" and the longer one was, if my memory serves me correctly, 3". The shorter round will fit into a Mauser 98 as the overall length is close to the OAL of the .375 H&H. My .585 Nyati (shorter version) is being built around a Bauska BBK action and there is loads of room in the magazine with the magnum length action.

Does the shorter length Nyati have enough guts to do the job?

Oh yes, a 750 grain projectile at up to 2500 f.p.s., ......I think it will do the job on any rampaging dinosaur!

475GuyOuch!! 750 gr @ 2500 f/s? How much is this dino killer going to weigh? I guess it'll need a muzzle brake.

BwanaBobNo muzzle brakes for me, thankyou!
This rifle will be fairly heavy, around 15lbs, and I will mostly shoot loads producing around 2200 f.p.s which is still more horsepower than any of us really need!

475GuyLord have mercy. 15#, I guess I'll just have a kid carry that thing for me for any distance.

But will you have any guts left after firing it?

As in our PM discussion I was only joking. One mother of a cartridge.
