Did anyone stumble upon the huge set of tusks that were in the Lewis and Drake booth? They were tusks from the 60's (Kenya??) one tusk was nearly 130 lbs and the other was well over 100. I went into an Ivory trance when I touched them.......

yes i saw them and they were huge. Double my ivory. they also had a sold tag on them and when i asked about it i was told they had been sold for $65k for the set. They had no weight stamping which supports the vintage of the harvest. Very nice tusks.

I touched them too. I was told the heavy tusk was 123lbs, and the working tusk was 104lbs. Awesome set of tusks, they almost looked prehistoric!

Those were the days!

ED, to most here the 1960s are prehistoric!

Anything bigger than my Hippo tusks is larger than anything I have taken!

The world record, at the British Museum, about 212 lbs per side:

The world record, in origin, weighed 237 1/2 and 226 1/2 pounds. Supposedly these were taken in 1897 and with the drainage nowadays should be around the 212 pounds quoted. PHC wrote a most informative chapter on the Kilimanjaro elephant.
By the way, do someone know what happened with the second pair, that taken by Powell Cotton?.
Ah, and Mac, not for everyone here the 60´s are prehistoric. In many senses we don´t see any improvement over that era.

I think you'll find they're on display at the Powell Cotton Museum (aka Quex house) in Birchington, Kent UK.

Here is a picture I took, it really does not do them justice but im sure yall can imagine.

50 lbs looks pretty good to a man who doesn't have any tusks at all, and no chance in improveing that sittuation in what is left of his lifetime!

WOW!!! to all the ivory showed here.. Met a gentleman who grew up in Kenya and hunted big ivory there while his Dad was stationed there for PanAm 747 pilot in the 60's... Saw his photo album and he grew up and became a PH in East Africa... A fine person to speak to at this years Vintagers shoot...

I know it depends upon the area etc etc. but what is looked upon as a good average pair of tusks these days?

Anything above 50 pounds/side is big.

I laid hands on them, and wondered for a second if they weren't real. But they are. The pictures don't do them justice.

They had "sold" sickers on them. Does anyone know if someone bought them at the show?

I think so. When I bought some chairs from them at the show I asked about them. She said they apparently sold them for about 40K to low because of offers they had from other buyers after they already sold them.

According to LD, they were purchased at the show for $65,000 and there was someone else trying to pay more as the deal was being done.
