Decisions, Decisions...
i have a chance to hunt either a buffalo or a hippo/croc soon for the same price. bear in mind i have shot 2 buffs, 2 croc, and a hippo- although IMHO, the croc is the most underrated trophy in Africa( a big one- not a little 11-12 footer). which way would you go?????

Jay,

If you shot a 14'+ croc with Johan you might have to look very hard to find a bigger lizard. I agree about the croc being an underarated trophy but I think the difficulty of finding one bigger than you've already taken might make me choose the buffalo particularly if the area will produce good trophies.

that was my feeling, too- until i shot a 15 footer the next year with Walter Enslin( Kwan) on Cahorra Bassa. i seriously doubt i would ever find onne bigger, but the old guys are just fun to hunt, as is a big hippo. then again, the most rewarding hunt i have ever had was a buff in the Omay- miles of walking in high heat but sealed the deal on the 9th day.

I would evaluate the area and find out which way would give you the most challenging hunt, but I would be leaning for the croc and hippo as it's 2 good hunts vs. 1

Thanks!

that is sort of my way of thinking.i don't care about trophy size anymore( i don't bring home anything but pictures/memories)- i just want a good, challenging hunt. i don't even care if i am not successful, as long as it is a fun hunt and everyone( especially me) puts out 100% effort. it is almost a situation of hunting 1 animal vs. 2 animals for equal cost. results are immaterial. but damn, big crocs are fun and difficult to outwit...

Buffalo. I've enjoyed every buff I've hunted, whether successful or not.

I've shot one hippo; on land even. Couldn't have cared less. Absolutely no interest in sniping one in the water while bobbing for air. Also, can't get excited about a croc. Don't know why as many have said it's underrated and a great hunt. Just doesn't appeal to me. YMMV however.

Then the decision's made...buffalo. I remember the hot October mid-days at Tiger Bay & the refreshing break by the pool when we were both there in 2010. There's just something about the adrenaline rush of chasing buffalo that is hard to explain to anyone who hasn't experienced it before.

+1 on the Buffalo.

I don't really have an interest in cats, so......to me elephant and buffalo are in a class by themselves.

Although I am still fascinated by the big croc I saw only a few meters away I never felt like hunting one.I would go for a buff with open sights in an area where there are good ones around so as to make the hunt exciting.It can be a downer shooting a somewhat young buff from a herd-especially with a scope.On the other hand if it is very dry or for whatever reason they are not around and getting a dagga boy is extremely difficult-then that is not good either.It is not good alone to go after buff you need to go after them in a good area.

BTW,I love the walking especially the long hard walks and being in nature carrying my rifle.That is why buff hunting appeals to me.

Wow, the village idiot, aka shootaway, has spoken again. Listen up dick weed. Listen to your PH. When he say's George, wait, wait George, you must listen. Next, a trip to your local zoo may provide an education for distinguishing a cow from a bull. Then, take your safety off your rifle before finishing off your suffering cow buff. Elephants in the Zim parks are not eating peanuts and waiting for photo ops. There is no hope for your sorry ass. Fact, you are the ultimate dumb ass. Big Grin

well, Don, we have already seen how well the Montreal Moron does with open sights on buffalo. and i frankly don't believe he walked up to within a few meters of a large croc( maybe at the same zoo??). but of course i will take his advice on my next elephant hunt and carry a bag of peanuts for bait..he reminds of the old saying- " it is better to close one's mouth and be thought a fool, than to open it- AND REMOVE ALL DOUBT!!! and now it's time for his bleeding heart friends to ride to his rescue and tell us that he REALLY isn't as stupid as his posts indicate.

Jay,
I can see this is causing you way too much mental and emotional suffering. To ease your mind I strongly suggest the following:

pick a hunt at random for either of the critters;
send me the money and I'll book it;
I'll do the hunt for you and send you the pictures.

Check, cash or credit cards accepted. Problem solved.

Better yet send money for both hunt then you could give him your option on which hunt to chose.
