Barnes New Banded Solids For Dg
Does anyone have experience with the "new" Barnes solids that have a flat meplat and some driving bands? I would like to know if they penetrate as deep as Bridgers, GS Custom, and regular Woodleighs.I had poor penetration from the old RN Barnes solids 2 years ago in both .375 H&H and .416 Rem.Thanks--bwana dogo

bwana, my direct answer to your question is No. However, note that the Barnes has a relatively small meplat compared to bridger, GS Custom and North Fork FN solids, so I would not expect the penetration to be as deep. But they are definitely an improvement over the old Barnes solids.

I have no personal knowledge, but Larry at Superior Ammo tells me that he is getting good reports.

In cal. .458 450 grs it is one of the best FN solids on the market. The sharp meplat with its diameter 8 mm is optimum for penetration in animals and resembles the SuperPenetrator
I compared both testing and with game.

500 grains,
What kind of improvement. I've used Barnes old style solids in 338 win mag and 416 rem mag and shot buffalo and had others shoot buffalo with the old solids with excellent results. They were accurate in both rifles. What is the major improvement(s) with the banded/flat nosed new solids? Have you killed buffalo with both? Thanks.

The improvement is that flat nose solids penetrate deeper than RN solids. Of all the solids I have tried, I found the old Barnes RN solids penetrated the shallowest.

Some people have said that they feel FN solids follower a straighter path in an animal than RN solids, but I have not found a way to document that.
