What african species dont you want to take...for one reason or another..?

There are only a few African critters I won’t take: Giraffe because I dont have room for a rug or shoulder mount and lions and leopard because I can’t afford the trophy fees. Throw in sable too- trophy fees out of my price range.

Crocodile, I have killed far n excess of a 1000 alligators, so the croc just does not interest me. Giraffe would also be on my list of animals not to hunt.

While I weas on the hunt Lora flew back to Texas, worked for the time I was on the hunt and then flew back and was waiting for me when I got off the flight back from Cambridge Bay with my trophies and the best part, meat from both my Musk Ox and Caribou.

That has always been my biggest hangup about going to Africa, I cannot bring the meat home and regardless of the comments so many make about the meat not going to waste, but the way I view hunting antlers/hides and horns are secondary, I want the meat! I like being able to go to the freezer 3 months after a hunt and pull out steaks from what I shot and cook them!

I have no desire to shoot a giraffe, in addition, that's my wife's favorite African animal. She has informed me that shooting one would have a serious affect on my sex life. I have taken two bull ele and loved every minute of the hunts but two is enough. I have shot zebra only for cat bait and found them just as crafty as other plains game but would only take them for that reason.

My wife has zero desire to go anywhere. Africa. Alaska. You name it. She doesn’t want to be part of any hunting trip. She wants to be on a beach.

I understand your thoughts on the meat and happy some people really like it. Me, not so much. I have zero desire to worry about the meat. I make sure it is always taken care of but it is not a priority for it to be in my freezer. I am more than willing to give it to someone who wants it more than I do. I do try and make sure and Jerky at least one animal per year. The kids love jerky. I am about horns and hides. If I don’t want to mount it. I won’t shoot it. I would rather have tag soup.

Currently, I have little desire to shoot any plains game animal.

I’ve been to Africa 3 times. Although I’ve been to Africa 3 times and enjoyed it, it’s pretty much out of my system. I’d rather hunt North America.

If I did return, it would be Zim or Namibia.

I have no desire for croc, hippo ( mainly as there is shit load of of them and trophy fees are nuts ) and tiny antelopes

I’ve never had even the slightest desire to shoot a giraffe. Other than that, there isn’t too much I wouldn’t shoot in Africa.

Edit- I should add that I also have no interest in the various ‘designer’ animals such as the various colored springboks or wildebeest. That stuff just strikes me as a gimmick. Same goes for a white lion.

Had the opportunity to shoot some PAC hyena when I was there a few weeks ago. Saw one driving around whom, after seeing us, proceeded to hide behind a bush and pop his head out every few seconds to see if we were still there. Reminded me of a not so bright dog. I like dogs so hyenas got a pass.

I will not shoot a rhino. Not interested in the small antelope.

I shot an old black bull giraffe this week. My wife was there and witnessed the entire hunt. No regrets.

I have shot a giraffe on my first safari, along with 11 other animals including a Zebra and some of the Tiny Ten. I really have no desire to shoot a baboon, or any monkey's (although they had to dispatch one that was getting into the kitchen while I was in camp, would gladly do that if necessary). Don't have much interest in Aquatic animals but that could change in the future. While I will most likely never shoot a Caracal I am definitely going to try for Leopard soon and maybe a Lion some time.

I have no interest in shooting blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, blesbok, bontybok, tsessebee, or their relatives. They are just too ugly. I have limited trophy room space so I will only shoot animals I think look good. I probably would also not shoot a giraffe because I have no place to put it. I just got home from my 5th trip to Africa yesterday, and there are still lots of good looking animals I want to hunt.

Giraffe and any of the primates. A giraffe when not heavily pursued will just stand around and watch you out of curiosity They have little fear. They're just not a game animals in my personal opinion. Baboons and monkeys just look too much like my relatives. I'll take one of everything else please.

Lora loves to go on trips with me here in North America and if it is where she can she likes to hunt. I have had one white tail buck shoulderr mounted, but the opnly reason I did was because the guy that was letting us hunt his property asked me if I was going to have it mounted when I took it by and showed it to him and I said I hadn't thought about it and he offered to pay half of the fee if I wanted to mount it so I did.

As far as antler mounts or skull mounts I do those myself.

Sorry for derailing the topic this far just one more little sideline though on the original subject, because people have asked or mentioned that with the probable exception of the Cape Buffalo, I could kill any of the others I listed right here in Texas on a hunting ranch, but it just would not be the same thing and I am fairly sure an Eland, while it might actually taste better having been raised on a Texas ranch, it just would noty have the same taste or carry the same memories as the meat of one killed in the African bush would have.

Like beauty, I guess ugly is in the eye of the holder. I love looking at all of the mounts of those animals on my trophy room walls.

On my last hunt in Mozambique I turned down an opportunity at a very large croc.

I guess about the only other African animal that I have no desire to shoot would be a gorilla.

That wasn't my experience. Quite the opposite, he was the wariest, cagiest animal I have ever pursued. He was at least 15 years old and hadn't gotten that old by accident. He had foiled many hunters before I got there.

At one point the PH was so frustrated he would have killed that giraffe with his bare hands if he could have gotten a hold of him. That old boy put us through the wringer.

I have several Gold Medal trophies. It is of the giraffe I am most proud.

That's why I put in my post "heavily pursued". As you wrote your giraffe had been previously hunted and it would seem several times. I can remember a couple of instances in Namibia and on the Luangwa in Zambia where we drove right up to them and they just calmly watched us. My post was not written to diminsh your giraffe hunt or anyone else's. They are just, for me not a trophy I desire.

It takes almost a human lifespan to grow a trophy elephant. Considering that, and their obvious intellect, I can't justify taking one.

I thought it would feel creepy and almost criminal to shoot a somewhat human-like baboon, but once I saw them in the flesh and became familiar their unsavory nature, I found no problem with taking several of them.

I have followed this post with great interest. It appears there is very little consensus which I think is good. Differences make the world go round.

My nemesis has been a Baboon so far. I cannot wait to take a big nasty stinky old male.

I would love to hunt the big five and others but $$$$ keep getting in the way. Oh well. I can always dream.

Nothing is really off of the table for me, except for some of the non-importables. Most of what you all say that you would not hunt and shoot, I have already hunted and shot. Would not shoot Cheetah or Black Faced Impala as they are not importable. For me, I see no reason in hunting something that I cannot bring home.

I'm not interested at all to hunt mutant animals such as black, copper & white springboks, black impala, white blesbok, golden & king wildebeests....as well as a bred and fenced lion.
Excepts these animals, I would be able to hunt all other animals in Africa if my wallet was bigger.

I have shot pretty much everything I am interested in shooting. Here's what I haven't shot:

1. Roan ... homely compared to a Sable and $$$$
2. Cheetah ... too pretty to shoot .. and scarce
3. Hippo ... like shooting a fish in a barrel, an ugly inedible fish to boot.
4. Lion ... can't afford it and I'm not a baiter.
5. Leopard ... taking an animal over bait with a light is shooting not hunting. Would do dogs but NLA.
6. Croc ... why?

The species I enjoyed hunting most, would do it again:

1. Caracal, in fact anything you can call in.
2. Nyala
3. Bushbuck
4. Klipspringer
5. Kudu
6. Baboons
7. Impala
8. Warthogs
9. Oryx
10. Red Duiker

The letdowns, done it, not worth the money:

1. Elephant ... like shooting a haystack
2. Buffalo ... like shooting a cow
3. Red Hartebeest ... too uugly
4. Blue Wildebeest ... too easy, dumbest looking animal there is.

The rest are somewhere in between. Once is enough. Giraffe is one of them. Eland too. Zebra.
