375LVRWarning - The dumbest question EVER asked on AR.
I am not sure if Saeed keeps records of the dumbest question asked, If so, I am about to set it. Hear it goes.
Is there any possiblility of going to the SCI convention in Reno and getting a booth at the last minute do to a cancelation? Is there a waiting list? Does anyone ever cancel?
I just proved that the quote " The only dumb question is the one not asked" is false

375LVRFallow, Thanks, that is what I was looking for. A friend of mine is hitting the ISE shows in the West (in Dever now) and was going to just pop in and see if he could get a booth. I didn't think that would be possible, but said I would go to the greatest source of hunting industry information on the planet (AR) and ask.
Fairgame, I will have to check that post out !
Thanks.

Kathi http://www.showsci.org/docs/co...oints%20Planning.pdfI do not know if this will be of any assistance to anyone for future Convention planning, but when SCI goes to Las Vegas (2012 & 2014) there will be approximately 500 more booth spaces.
Please see attached link.

How can that be

Why would anyone want to exhibit at a show where they are ripped off by management?
Read that somewhere here............

You more properly fall into the ignorant( ie not aware of) category.
Then there is the Stupid Category...

I agree!
Now, would anyone please give us the details of the funny charges SCI adds on for having Internet connections, electrical connections, TV rent and so on?
I understand their charges for the above services would make the Mafia very jealous!

Larry SellersSaeed - In the US most ALL shows, sporting goods, hunting, tech shows, SHOT Show, car shows etc. charge a fee for the items you mentioned. You can also add plants, carpet, furniture and other props to your list as well. As a former Sporting goods sales rep, witnessed this practice in every show I ever was a part of. It's just the norm. Sooooooo trying to suggest that SCI is somehow the only Show ripping people off by this practice isn't valid. Just the S.O.S. to stir the pot.
I am sure some exhibitors here could let us know if DSC and some other Shows they are familiar with have the same practice? Betting they do.

billrquimbyDon't know if it's still true, but a company not associated with the club used to contract with the City of Reno for the exclusive right to rent tables, chairs, rugs, projectors, electronics, and all the other props used by exhibitors at shows held at the Reno Community Center. Similarly, the food and beverage dealers also had to deal with the city to operate in the community center.
I suppose the same set up exists because I know for a fact that the contractor charges SCI for renting and setting up all the microphones, tables, chairs, tablecloths, and even the pitchers of water used in the "First African Safari" seminar that I moderate up there every year.
If you want to hear some screaming, just wait until the SCI show is in Las Vegas in 2012, and the exhibitors who aren't used to dealing with the unions in that city get their first taste of those guys.
I was on staff years ago when the SCI convention was last held in 'Vegas, and exhibitors were supposed to hire a union man with a handcart to move anything across the show floor after the exhibition halls were officially opened. I know, because a union steward complained about my using an SCI cart to move a box of books to the club's records committee booth.
Other rules applied, even before the show opened. One exhibitor had a giant-sized bear trap that he wanted to unload at his booth with a fork lift that he had trucked half way across the country. The union would not allow him to operate it inside the hall, and he had to rent another forklift and pay its operator to unload it before the show and then load it after it ended.

Larry SellersBQ - You are exactly right about the problems facing exhibitors and show goers in Las Vegas. I have worked numerous shows there and know what dealing with those folks entails. That's why I will miss the SCI Convention next year as it's being held in Las Vegas. Last time it was there, the Show food was very bad and extremely overpriced, the hall was less than clean shall I say, the people associated with the unions and food service were very rude and in general just sucked. SCI is just "another" convention in Vegas.
In comparison, Reno goes all out to accommadate the SCI Convention. To welcome banners at the airport with very friendly staffing there, shuttle service to and from the convention, hotel and casino staff make you feel very welcome and appreciated, the show area is spotless, food vendors are adequate, meeting rooms are well appointed, just overall a first class setup. In the past I have worked Shows in 8 or 10 major US city locations and Reno is heads above all of them.
Thanks as usual for you insight Bill, see you at the Show.

SaeedMy complaint is not about the charges by themselves.
But, by the amount being charged.
Like $100 for a few days Internet connection for a small booth?
Someone also told me that buying a TV set from Walmart and throwing it away afterwards was cheapoer than hiring one.
How can that be?

Saeed,
Excessive charges are pretty common in the world of union controlled trade shows, regardless of venue.
I have participated in trade shows in other industries - the expenses are absurd. Yes, it is much cheaper for us to buy flora, carpet, etc from the local suppliers and then throw them away.
We once had to pay for an hour of union time, around $85 bucks, to have a union electrician plug a power cord into an electrical socket.
I do not begrudge the working man the right to provide for his family. The problem is the monopoly of the venue. It is against the rules to have any competition for the services - so they can charge whatever the market will bear.

Larry SellersSaeed - Didn't realize you were coming to exhibit at the SCI Convention in Las Vegas. Congrats!! I assume this since you have a complaint against the prices for service provided there. If this is not the case why do you have a complaint since you won't be paying the bill??

Just curious.
I don't know the reason behind the move to LV next year, but maybe another renovation of the facility in Reno is involved?
Bill Q and JDB are absolutely correct in their assesment of the LV situation. Most exhbiitors are most likely aware of this and will as always make a plan and do their best.
