Checklist

I am preparing my gear for next summer as I plan to work as a camp manager/game manager.

Can anyone provide me a link to the checklist on this site for basic medical necessities and such.

Gear:

Buck knifes (have)
Cutco Knife (buying)
Leatherman (buying)
Hatchet (have)
Boots (buying, need sugg) Army surplus?
Clothes (buying)
Glasses (have) costa del mar
Camera (have pentax, may buy cannon)
Lap-top (have)
Guns (semi have) depends on if allowed
I am missing alot prob

Medicine/medical:

Need checklist as I am planning on bringing needles, antibiotics, narcotics, tylenol, stitches and needles, gold bond, etc etc

I am preparing for a three month stay, so I need to pack accordingly.

I find it surprising that someone who claims to be in medical school, doesn't know you can't just "bring narcotics" to Africa, or any other destination for that matter.

And you won't need any knives ... I have yet to see a white man use a knife in Africa. Other than to cut biltong or eat dinner.

Did not see specific mention of a hat.

You'll need two (one to serve as a spare) soft boonie-style hat with a round brim. Don't bother with a baseball cap as they don't protect your ears and neck.

the list will depend on where your going and where your camp is (how far from town) there is almost nothing you can't get in africa.

I always take ambien and cipro.

Will you be in a malaria area?

I started skinning my Nyala until the skinner commented that I was good, but slow. At that point I turned it over to him and went to dinner. Yea I am slow. There is at least one pre-teen girl that can clean, skin, and quarter two hogs to my one. That plus I was very nervous on the Nyala.

First, Im not in Med School, Im a sophomore at a college majoring in Biology. I want a kit that will have the basic medical needs as they may not be readily available. I want clean, sterile needles, and other items for obvious reasons.

Second, living on the water and fishing for a job will make you apperciate your sun glasses. I am very partial to my glasses as I wear them everyday, its not that they are overly nice, its that they work.

I have Steves book, I just need to read it a bit more closely. From what I have been told many items in Africa are not readily available. Maybe Alan Bunn will explain this logic.

I have specifically been told by several to carry a buck knife or similar. I may not be skinning game, but I will need knives. Maybe some folks dont carry a knife with them at all times, but I use my pocket knife daily.

My Godfather made a medical kit in case of emergency. The PHs requested he leave the kit, and each time he traveled to Africa he brought a fresh kit. He got local doctors to write prescriptions for antibiotics, and other unabtainable items. He did not want to chance getting in a bad situation and needing a needle that was not his. Africa has Aids and many other diseases (as does America). I thought it would be a good idea to have stitching material, needles to stitch, antibiotics, antibiotic ointment, and pain killers.

I have also spent nearly a year in Africa, and like you I have never needed a needle. Hell, I have never visited a doctor there and have only been to a pharmacy once.

But if you did need a needle I bet you would be glad that you brought your own!

I seem to remember someone's medical kit checklist recommending needles. Boddington?

Boots (buying, need sugg) Army surplus? - aremy boots?? Dude, NO. Unless you are in the mountains use trail runners, they are light, soft and comfortable. No need for large boots in most of Africa
Clothes (buying) - or just buy there
Glasses (have) costa del mar - sure
Camera (have pentax, may buy cannon) - a large SLR is nice if you like photography. I get more use from a small olympus water proof that is handy and is carried everywhere. A large SLR can become a pain in the ass to lug everywhere.
Lap-top (have) - download Nokia PC suit before you go and get a GPRS enables cell phone while there. Then you will have internet anywhere you have cell recpetion. I am doing that in malawi right now.
Guns (semi have) depends on if allowed

- more than one? Just take one and use camp guns. of course this depends where you go.
Travel light.

Game 'manager'? Most people have years of experience before they are wildlife managers. Try get an appy job and enjoy it...

rehydrate pack for 'Delhi bellie',
broadbase antibiotics and a good few books to read, if you are in the complete sticks.
All this you could surely get in Southern/Eastern Africa

Camp manager is the term used for the position, some refer to it as game manager. It appears like one works as camp manager, apprentice, ph, however, my understanding is only through various readings and communications.

What I have asked and responded is different ideas and questions that have been raised by correspondence with others who have traveled Africa.
