If I am not mistaken in a few episodes of the old Tarzan series with Johnny Weismuller the plot involved Leaopard Men.

This was an intriguing read. George Rushby and the "lionmen" of Njombe was brought to mind.

This sort of thing, usually instigated by the local sorcerers is commonplace in Africa, even to this day. People are regularly murdered for ritual purposes in rural areas (urban n'angas preferring to sub-contract to their village counterparts). "Muti" killings, to enhance business success or whatever.

Add to that that the Congo Basin is primal, in a way that you have to have been there to appreciate. Zimbabwean soldiers deployed there when Mugabe was looting their diamonds under the auspices of supporting their government, and de-mining contractors I worked with in Iraq have told me firsthand stories of witnessing cannibalism.

I followed Stanley's route down the Congo with a few diversions to retrace the footsteps of Col Hoare back in the '80s. Mobutu pretty much had a lid on things then, but there were a lot of places where you felt you might meet Rod Serling around the next bend. This area is as close to primordial Africa as you're going to get.
