Hi all

I am seeking a safri, done like it was a 100 years ago..Yes, I am crazy

What I like, if it can be done, is to go out and hunt, hunt for the food we need and sleep in small camps. No need for the large camps and the 4*4.

Yes, I know it will be HARD work, but still I love to try it.
Have anyone done a safari like these?

Oh, yes, thats tru, where to go?
Well, I am thinking of Namibia and also the deep green jungels of CAR, Cameroon and so.

I find the jungel great, and so I find the northern part of namibia.

You may wish to look into a safari with Natasha Illum Berg. She hunts Tanzania. She used to be independent but now hunts with Robin Hurt Safaris. Her specialty is foot safaris.

She is the only licensed female PH in Tanzania. In talking with othe PH's, they have nothing but great things to say about her competence.

My friend and I will be doing 3 weeks with her in October. I hope it works out--I'll have to work at cleaning up my language before then!

You will also probably find PHs in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Namibia, and other countries who will do a back pack safari on request.

Spring

We came across an old-style walking safari last September in the Selous. They had lots of porters and support staff in addition to the normal trackers and cooks. The hunt had two hunters and they had arranged to have their walking hunt through Luke Samaras on his massive concessions in the Selous. They were mostly after buffalo. If I were looking for this type of hunt, I'd check with him.
Here's a pic I took as they were camped on a sand river. You'll see the nicer tents in the far background where the hunters stayed. The hunters, trackers, and such were out hunting when we happened to come by.

In one of his books Walt Prothero wrote about a hunt he did in Namibia that was a back pack hunt. I think you're pretty broad on your desire. You might want to be more specific on the game hunted to narrow down the places to hunt.

I´ve also read an article about such an hunt for mt zebra.. Other species also possible. Can´t remember who the outfitter was.

I would think Cam Creig who arranges selfguided hunts would be the right one to contact.
I would like to try that for Cameroun myself one time.

Well, yes, Cameroon has been on my mind, but then it have to be a jungle only.

Thanks for the names to the ph´s in Zimbabwe, I will mail them.

Where I like to go? Well, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
I am seeking it to be back pack style, with the lowest number of staff as I can get.

Hunt for what we eat and sleep where we find it best, for one night or more.

If the adventure is more important than the number of animals taken( and it should be) then you should have a great time. Just be sure you are willing to return to wherever your home is with only memories. I have more trouble with the thought of coming home empty handed than I should. Cheers, Adrian

Yes, I know what you mean......But, I am ready for a looong walk, and lots of great memories.

I know that a hunt/safari like these one will be more for the trip, memories, than the # of games taken. And thats fine.

Try KarlS from Ndumo Safaris he has some very big areas in the north of Namibia I have been trough some of the area on the way to Angola and there is 100's of miles without even cattle fences. That should do it for you.

I have a friend who has a very undeveloped(no fences, only a few waterholes) farm near the damaraland.If you go into the mountains and hunt mountainzebra you have to work hard. I can organise this relativly cheap. Send me a pm if you interested.

And that's not crazy, that's the best way to do it

I think he hunted mt zebra, springbok, and gemsbok. I'd look at the book and tell you who he hunted with, but it's currently packed in the depths of my truck in my transition from Ohio to Alaska. If anyone else could look at the book and post the outfitter it would be appreciated. The book is Safari: A Dangerous Affair by Walter Prothero.

I'm not sure if this is wild enough for you but in Botswana we offer a safari out in the Kalahari desert where you camp out in a spike camp with no showers, pop up tents, limited staff and hunt on foot. Every 3 days or so you would return to a base camp for showers, resupply and then be gone again. Hunitng will be excellent for all Kalahari species.
