using fail safe istead of solid
Hi
i have a good suply of fail safe ammo in 3006 180 grain and 375 H&H 270 grain. when i tested the 180 grain on wet papper it went through all the bunch of packed papper whille the other went only ½ of the length or little more(nosler). my question is ?: is it possible to use fail safe bullets in 375 for frontal shooting of elephants?. would it go through the massive bone of elephant skull?
regards
yes

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

I would say absolutely not... Take a fail safe and grind it down length wise to look at how it is put together, and do the same for a solid and you will see why solids are made for deep penetration..

I would not hesitate to use it on a side brain shot.

But, ob a frontal shot I would prefer a good solid.

Why on earth would you want to do that? Use solids. That's what they're made for.

I wouldn't even consider carrying one in my culling belt let alone in my chamber while hunting elephants. While it might work on a side brain shot, elephants have a nasty habit of turning to face you right when you line up for a side brain shot. It has happened to me several times. The soft is entirely unsuitable for a frontal shot so what do you do? Back off, try to eject the soft and bring up a solid? What if you are charged unexpectedly? That has also happened to me on two occasions. When I carry a soft or two for buff when hunting elephants I carry them in my pockets where I won't accidentally grab one around elephants.

I would only use solids for elephant huntingattacked for whatever reason then I would use it, but I would not be a happy camper. On a side brain shot with everything hunky dory it would probably work. I would not rely on it for a frontal heart shot.

As to the bullet itself, I have used it some and I much prefer Noslers, and if I wanted to use a monolithic it would be a GS Customs or even a Barnes X...I know of too many failures with the older Fail safes, the new ones may or may not be better, I have heard both good and bad about them, but that in itself is enough reason for me not to use them.

Definately not. Use good solids only.

When hunting elephant you never know exactly what angle of a shot you will have.

Confession time. I'm one of those hunters that one time can make an unbelievable shot...but there's always the odd chance it could be an atrocious debacle. '05 in Zim I took the 180 gr. 30-06 failsafe as you reference. Shooting for leopard bait it was debacle after debacle. 'Found everything and got it down, but what a bloody mess. I got some nice trophies but all the animals were doing some strange things. Back home at the range I shot failsafes and other regular factory loads. Maybe it is just my old Rem 700, but those failsafes were doing some mighty weird s**t out of my barrel. Not a lick of trouble with the other loads. I'll never carry another failsafe ever.

This trait indicates that you are a typical, normal human being and hunter, the fact that you admit it leads me to believe you are an honest and un-conceited fellow and no FIGJAM.

This same admission indicates that you are a remarkably atypical AR or other internet outlet hunter or shooter where all rifles shoot sub MOA groups and all shots are perfect and all game is killed with only one shot...
