jsrieckAmmo availability
Please rank the top 3 cartridges (and bullet weights) most likely to be found in a remote African location.
Wondering what my choices would be should the ammo not make it with the rifles.

kududeIf you are in camp, the only ammo will be that the ph has. This will be for his rifle(s) and pretty slim pickin's. I'd think the most common ph calibers would be 375HH, 416RM, 458WN, and 300WM(Plains Game).
You will not find ammo for sale except in larger communities. The only gun stores I've been in were in RSA, and their selection was pretty mundane (243, 270, 308, etc.).
If the airline screws your baggage, you are in Deep Dodo! The "good" news is that if they loose your ammo, they'll loose you rifle too. Kudude

retreeverJsrieck, this is what many of us do...separate ammo into your bags... Put half of each ammo in each bag...So if one bag is late you still have 50% of your ammo....

Use Enough GunI agree with Retreever. Let's see, the top three cartridges to be found would be .375, .458 Win and .308, with the .270 not far behind.

Michael RobinsonYes, indeed.
If you are given to worrying about such things, then find out the caliber rifle your PH will be using, and bring one of those.

ozhunterI have been to a few camps in Zimbabwe where they had spare Rifles and ammo. Most often 375H&H, 416REM & RIG and 458win.

infinitoAsk the outfitter when you want to book......and ask him to get some for you in advance....what you do not use you can always take back...

D HunterDang...... I am surprised that there is apparently no 30-06 ammo in Africa??!?? I would have figured 30-06 and 303 British would be the most common along with 375, 9.3 458. The truth is that each store is each store. No way to tell you what is on the shelf today in West Nicholson Zimbabwe's only shop that carries ammo. It will depend on what you need and what is on the shelf that particular day. As said above, nice to be using the same cartridge as your PH. Then again if your gun doesn 't make it ammo is not critical.

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

kududeIn many countries you cannot buy ammo for a rifle you do not own, and some limit the number you can own. Most ph's carry rifles which support their professional work, and these are in the 375HH and up category. If they have a 30-06 or similar rifle , it is at home. Kudude
