Are A-Square monolithics suitable in a Krieghoff Classic double barrel 9,3 X 74 R or can the barrels get damaged?

Since there are a number of good conventional solids that are absolutely safe on your double rifle, regardless of what Krieghoff says, I'd stay away from the solid brass, or bronze solids like the A-Square, Or Barnes super solids in a double rifle. You must remember, if it does damage your rifle, it will be out of service for a year on average before the repairs are made, if Krieghoff is willing to fix it at all.

IMO, the only mono-metel bullet that is safe in all double rifles if the North Fork flat nose, and CUP point, pressure ring, solids made of pure copper. They make a very good 9.3 solid! With the cup point, you don't need a soft point at all. The CUP point will expand enough to handle lighter game, but looses no weight, and remains a viable solid for the "BITE-BACKS"!

Just my opinion, but I will not use the A-square monolithic, or Barnes super solids in any of my double rifles.

Cropduster, I have no experience with the GS Custom. I'm sure they are fine solids, but I simply can't say since I have not used them. Ray uses them all the time, and he uses them in his Searcy PH double rifle, but that rifle is said to be OK with even the monolithics, by Butch. Even if I had a PH Searcy I still would not use the older monolithics in it, but that is a personal thing, others may do as it pleases them!

Since you are in SA, have you considered shooting Stewarts Bullet?

I have used GS Custom FN solids in my Krieghoff 500/416. I do not know when the damage is supposed to occur but I have seen no evidence yet. Perhaps I have not shot enough of them?!!! In any case, I believe that the K gun is modern in design and uses modern steels, so I will continue to use them. Having said that, at about a buck each I don't just go down to the range and blast off 50 rounds at a clip! I have also used Woodleigh solids in my K gun, again, without incident. No rifling has appeard on the outside of the barrel as some posts have implied!

That's primarily a concern of older doubles. Particularly English doubles of the famous "between the wars" period in which their steel is recognized widely as being soft (by modern standards).

Your Krieghoff probably has thicker barrel walls than guns of that era, and IF you see any damage in your gun I suspect that it would come in the form of a loose rib, as opposed to rifling being pushed out.

I don't think Northfork has pics of their flat point or cup point bullets up, can anybody post some pics so I can see what they look like? Thanks very much!

My new rifle fires Woodleigh 286 gr RN SN very well. Why not using Woodleigh's FMJ bullet instead of monolithics? Any experiences with it?

Sunshine, I used the term "Woodleigh solids" in my post. I may have misspoken. They may be FMJ's I will have to check. In any case, the Woodleighs have an excellent reputation.

The copy I have of the Krieghoff published reload data for their 500/416 shows both softs and solids of the Woodleigh design as their bullet.

This data was published by Krieghoff a couple of years ago when there was no supplier of "factory" ammunition for them and they wanted to keep their customers shooting.I have loaded both softs and solids and shot them in my K gun with no problems at all.

When I received the rifle used, there were several (60 or so) custom loads from a couple of custom loading outfits in the deal. They included some of the Barnes solids and HP type rounds. We had a lot of fun shooting them up, however the copper fouling was outrageous. Took a solid week of foam bore solvent cleanings to get it out.

ChopperGuy. Thanks for the reminder. I have some K factory ammo for my 500/416 and they include Woodleigh softs and FMJ/solid whatever they are!
