Anyone read "Dangerous Game Rifles" by Terry Wieland ?
Would you mind having a look at the book and telling me if it has sections for double rifles by "Westley Richards" and "James Purdey" ?

Thank you.

Yes, there are sections on both firms. He really only talks at any length about Westley Richards, Rigby, Purdy Holland & Holland and the other top British makes. Not much about continental doubles, etc.

One thing that suprised me in his book's Double Rifle section was, he talked at length, approvingly, about MERKEL, and the California RIGBY double rifles, but didn't even mention Heym, from Europe or the B.Searcy from the USA!

It seems funny that if USA made double would be mentioned at all, the two most well known were not both discussed. Of the Continental doubles, only Merkel was discussed, when Heym is one of the top rifles from Europe!

I find the book to be well written, and very informative! IMO,the book is a real value, for money spent! thumb

Isn't the U.S. Rigby built with a Merkel action? How do you get to Forty Grand this way? I agree with the other poster, the Heym seems like a good value or the Searcy and Butch seems like a great guy. I own the book and it is well written. Terry knows his stuff, does lots of research, is a veteran of many serious safaris and is quite opinionated but who isn't.

I have no experience at all with double rifles, but I've read the book and agree with Mac's comments..........no mention of Heym or Searcy. bewildered

I learnt a lot from the book and enjoyed it but he did leave out a few popular brands/actions/rifles and included few that don't seem popular or widespread at all (perhaps just outside the US).

He made some small ommissions too..one I remember being that Sauer doesn't chamber larger than 9.3x62?

I have read Terry Wieland's book on African rifles and found it interesting and informative. I believe that it will join the great pantheon of African rifle books, along with Taylor's, Boddington's and Woods's. Yes, there are some interesting ommissions. I prefer to believe they are a result of Wieland not wanting to expound on makers that he knows little about, but what do I know!

There are two or three pages, starting on page 68, on Heym doubles and bolt guns.

I have Gregor Wood's book, which I think is excellent and Terry Weiland's book.

Too bad I couldn't have persued Terry Weiland's book at a library before spending $$$ on it...

I definitely recommend Woods book though.
