Hunters Pledge Support to Government Effort to Preserve Wildlife

Alex Abutu

19 January 2012

A coalition of hunters operating under the auspices of the United Hunters Society has pledged their support to government efforts in preserving wildlife.

The society in a chat with Daily Trust said that their main objective was to assist and complement government effort in safeguarding endanger species and creating necessary awareness on the need for environmental friendliness among hunters.

Alhaji Ademu Tanimu, Chairman of the Abuja chapter of the society said that they were passionate about hunting as it remained a potent tool for job creation among youths. "We create awareness and unity among youths about hunting and the need for them to embrace it as a hubby that is capable of enhancing their socio-economic well being."

Tanimu said that the society was able to discourage indiscriminate bush burning and hunting of endangered species in areas where it operate.

He said that the society collaborates with forest communities across the nation in protecting the government reserved forest. "Our members are aware that hunting in government game reserved or forest is a crime and they stay off such reserved areas, we work with local communities in bring to the government attention those who violate such laws."

He also said that the society collaborate with the Nigerian police and forest guards in monitoring activities of those that hunt endangered species as well as those who hunt in game reserves.

The General Secretary, Mansur Aliyu Zaria said that the society also assist private and government researchers by providing species such as snakes and other animals needed for research.

Zaria said the society also work with security agencies in discouraging indiscriminate use of fire arm and explosive in the society.

The society according to the Secretary currently has it's headquarter in Kaduna with chapters in Abuja, Katsina, Bauchi and other states in northern Nigeria.

Daily Trust recall that Nigeria was in 2005 banned as a member of the global wildlife body the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species due to the breach in wildlife trade and weak legislation following the export of a baby Gorilla and Chimpanzee from Nigeria were drowned in veterinary chemicals and exported to Cairo, Egypt leading to the ban placed on Nigeria.

The ban on Nigeria was however lifted in August 2011at the 61st meeting of the CITES standing committee held in Geneva, Switzerland.

I think he is my long lost relative who is trying to get money out of the country. I gave him my bank account number, now I am just counting the days until I receive $13,000,000 and book my 21 day hunt in Masailand.
