Chris,

I did some internet research and came across the CDC website. Since 'Northern Province' was mentioned, I asked my doctor for the Malaria meds. I told the outfitter I was booking through, and he said he didn't think we needed it, but that most people do take them just to be safe. I guess my intent was just be be safe rather than sorry. Now I'm starting to hear though that maybe there is nothing to worry about. I'll think this through a bit the next few days. Thanks again for the advice.

Paul,

I hunted the same area as you're going to in early June of last year and had the same advice as you...

I took Doxy although in hindsight I don't think it was needed...I am glad to say I did'nt see a single mozzie during my stay..

Doxy also provides protection from tick bite fever so all in all, i don't think its such a bad thing to take it..better safe than sorry as you say..

I'm fairly light skinned and had no problems at all with regards the increased sun sensitivity that is sometimes a side effect of Doxy..

Regards,

Pete

Haha... I was hoping he would take my bet and I could have given him my name and address to send the check to. If I wasn't who I said I was, the check wouldn't have made it to me, right?

I do get a good laugh here sometimes.

But now, drumroll please........ I'll see you all in about a week and a half. The day has arrived! We're off to South Africa as soon as we wake up tomorrow morning! I will post pics when we return. Hunt safe, and have fun!

I wasn't in bed quite that early, but with a 6:30 a.m. flight to New York, I was in bed early that night.

What can I say but "WOW".

We are definitely going again next May. This was my first safari, and I am very impressed with our Outfitter and PH. The plains game I took: Impala, Blesbok, Warthog, Blue Wildebeest, Gemsbuck, Impala #2 and Steenbuck. Five of the seven (all but the Gemsbuck and Warthog) all ranked very high in the SCI record book (all 5 in the top 100). I found out that 'top 100' doesn't actually mean you got one of the best 100 animals, because there are people tied at 37, 38, 39, etc. Top 100 seems to mean that you have one of the top 100 scores, but at each score there can be many animals. Still I was told top 100 is an accomplishment.

My favorite was the Gemsbuck, as it was the one I wanted the most, and we tracked and spotted a herd for 2 days before finally ending the stalk with a 200+ yard crawl on hands and knees.

We night hunted twice, and I got: 2 Genet cats, 5 Babboons and 1 Porcupine. I also missed an African Wildcat. Once during the day I missed a Jackal that quickly crossed a path in front of us.

I will be posting pictures in the 'hunting reports' area within a day or two. I just need to pick the best ones and resize.

Paul well done! Sounds like you accomplished the most important item of any safari, you had a great time and plan to return.
Now get to work on those pics.
What part of Pa do you come from?

I'm about 30 miles south of Pittsburgh. I think I'll be able to get a few of the pictures up tomorrow, then the rest the day after.
