I wonder if anyone has told them about this SHOT Show thing about the same time?

Dallas is a HUGE mistake for SCI, IMO.
Las Vegas - Well, SCI is just another convention to that city.

SCI was special to Reno - we made their Winter season - and we were treated very well as a result.

Anybody know why SCI stopped using Reno?

I believe you and I are a bit biased towards Reno. Many, many folks have complained that Reno was too small and not glitzy enough. If you or I had to travel via air to the show I doubt Reno would be our first choice either.

I will plan to make it to the 2010 and 2011 shows as I can't really see myself traveling to Texas for the SCI show. But I might feel different in a few years.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Yeah, no doubt I'm biased towards Reno, but not simply because of proximity. I do fly up rather than drive.

I've been to a number of SCI conventions in Las Vegas and base my concern on how we were treated by service personnel, from hotel to restaurant and especially taxi drivers.

Besides, Reno has a Cabella's. Big Grin

And who gives a shit about the hundreds of exibitors with their booth materials stored in Reno having to cart that all over the place to a different location every year?!

I had never thought of that. No wonder safaris are expensive.

SCI only cares about how much money they can get into their coffers.

So all depends on how much kickbacks they get from the city that decides where they go.

The only problem with Reno for me is the weather. The two times I have attended SCI Reno, it took as long to get from NM as it does to go to Africa. Dallas or Las Vegas are both much easier to travel to in the winter. Time is the big factor.

I see that there are three reasons for the change:

1. Air travel into Reno during the convention is a nightmare. Not enough capacity for the SCI influx.

2. Hotel and convention floor space is maxed out. Also, there is no viable convention/hotel combo that can really handle the SCI crush (Peppermill does not cut it). As a result, you are spread all over town. Many folks forget that the conventions in the 1970s were a small affair, that worked nicely in Reno. All the exhibitors were in a small room and your admission to the show included all meals and all entertainment. People ate three meals a day with each other, got to know each other, and, from what I hear, many friendships were made and good times were had. Reno was well suited to this environment. Those days are over.

3. The shift of the SCI membership to the heartland. CJ McElroy established the club in California (Los Angeles I think). Reno was an ideal location for the California-based club to have its convention. Now that the membership is so large and widespread, a convention site in the middle of the country is more viable.

Personally, I can be in Dallas in 1.5 hrs, non-stop. I can get to Las Vegas in 3.5 non-stop. Reno takes me all day with at least two connections. As an attendee, I'd prefer either of those over Reno.

Only 3 things listed for 2012 so far on the Convention Center calendar and no listing for SCI for 2013 because they don't show the calendar that far out. Don't read to much into the Convention Center on-line calendar or you'll just pull the scab off the whole DSC vs. SCI debate.

Saeed may be on to something here...

For me, I like driving a fun car, and the Jag convertible is just that. Eight hours on the road or a bit less, and Patsy Cline on the jukebox.

It's why I'm driving to the shoot in Houston next month!
