FAVORITE AFRICAN MOVIE...
NOT hunting videos but
movie shot in Africa,
Movie about Africa,
Movie with Africa as a main part...

I have two of them,
The Snows of kilimanjaro, (gregory Peck, Susan Hayward)
THE Ghost in the Darkness (Val Kilmer)

something to watch during the rest of the long winter nights.

NEVER fear the night. Fear what hunts IN the night.

Out of Africa was good the first time through it.

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

"Mogambo" and "Last Safari" top my list.

Other good ones are "White Hunter, Black Heart", "Hatari", and "Zulu".

Michael Douglas' presence in the movie ruined "Ghost and the Darkness" for me, and the sappy sentimentalism in "I Dreamed of Africa" ruined the wonderful cinematography of that film.

"Out of Africa" was filmed as a love story more than anything else, and it might as well have taken place in France for all the African atmosphere in it. Big Grin

I liked "In the Blood", but really it's a hunting video wrapped inside a "coming of age" flick.

George you are dead right--the Michael Douglas character in that movie was ludicrous. And would have been even if someone other than Michael Douglas, who admittedly is one of my least favorite actors, had played the role. Kilmer was good as Patterson and I only wish the studio and the producers had done it right.

"Zulu" is one of the all time best.

I would add "The Naked Prey" (with Cornel Wilde) to the list, along with "The Macomber Affair" (Gregory Peck).

Zulu is my all time favorite movie.

Being a history buff I also enjoyed "The Final Chapter" and Rhodesian Forces 1 & 2 a series of documentaries on the Rhodesian Bush wars.

The mini-series Shaka Zulu

My all time favorite "THE FLAME TREES OF THIKA "mini-series. The movie is about author Elspeth Huxley's early years in Africa. One of the best movies about Old Africa.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned "The Gods must be Crazy"!! Wink Eeker

Seriously though, I enjoyed "The African Queen" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" quite a bit.

Not real big on "Out of Africa". I agree with George on that one and also about "The Ghost and the Darkness"....take Douglas out of it and you got a pretty good movie. His character, Remington, ruined it for me.

"Hatari" is a hoot. Could watch that one a bunch more times.

"Shaka Zulu" miniseries was great.

Haven't seen "The Macomber Affair", but my interest in finding it is now renewed.

I haven't seen "I Dreamed of Africa" yet, but certainly will at some point.

Cheers,
Canuck

The late 1970's BBC mini series "Search For The Nile" about Burton, Speke, Baker, Livingston, Stanley, etc. was exceptional, very realistic and true to history. Wish it was available again.

Remember, Out of Africa was written by a woman so sentimentality is probably to be expected.

If you have ever read Patterson's book, ANYTHING would be an improvement as IMHO the book was a real snorer. "Oh, by the way, a hundred or so workers were killed last week". Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie and the Michael Douglas role was fun but not true to history but the original telling by Patterson was anything but exciting.

Thanks,

In addition to those already mentioned, "A Boy Ten Feet Tall", known in the UK as "Sammy Goes South." A great film made in 1962, about a boy coming of age, and co-starring Edward G. Robinson as an old retired elephant poacher.

Does anyone remember a movie "In Africa Texas Style"? I saw it when I was very young and that was when the bug first bit me.

and anything on Discovery channel about the animals...

"Sands of the Kalahari" is right up there with "Naked Prey" & "Zulu", IMO. Enjoyed most all of those mentioned except for the Eastwood movie.

I certainly recall enjoying the old Frank Buck movies, as a kid. "Bring'em Back Alive", "Wild Cargo" etc. Seems they're no longer aired or available, in any form. If anyone should know where they can be had, I'd like to hear from you. Thanks.

The naked prey-I think was the name where this guy runs across africa trying to flee for his life from the kings warriors,Lawrence of arabia, and zulu,Greystokes tarzan, and capsticks last safari, and there was one 60s movie where the baboons were killing people to drink their blood because of drought!I think that actually happened in real life.Howard Hills longbow movie Tembo shot back in 50s.Anyone want to borrow that movie classic I will share/ship to you if you promise to return!Anyone got a safari hunting movie we could trade to watch and then return?

I like a lot that have been mentioned:

"Zulu" is probably my favourite along with
"Out of Africa" except the screen play is not very historically accurate and neither is "her" book (!).

The "Gods must be crazy" everyone should see.

Bogart and Hepburn are timeless in "The Africa Queen" and funny too.

"Dogs of War" is good but the book by Frederick Forsythe is much better. It details how to setup a mercenary mission to Africa and was reportedly based on a real mission financed by Forsythe that got 'sprung'.

"Tears of the Sun" could be set anywhere but isn't that far off from real life Africa in some countries from time to time ie the black Africans not the American "rescue" mission.

"Shout at the Devil" - used to enjoy it but haven't seen it for a very very long time so who knows. Based on the Wilbur Smyth novel sent in Tanganyika in WW1.

"Wild Geese" - a classic and fiction based on Colonel Michael Hoare and his real band of "Wild Geese".

Just bought the DVDs of "Shaka Zulu" and it was better the second time viewed.

"King Solomon's Mines" for the movie based on a book which launched many of the FIRST African explorer/hunters/ivory hunters dreams and later adventures to become many of the hunters and authors we now read of from the late 1800's and early 1900's. The first production as well, but the second has its eye candy.

"She" by the same author, H. Rider Hagaard, simply for the story and again the book.

"Mountains of the Moon" for 'historical' fiction.

"Hatari", "Magambo", "Macomber Affair" and "The Snows of Mt Kilimanjaro" - for fun.

"The Sword and the Lion" for Morrocco.

"The Mummy" and "Mummy II" for their adventure fun in Egypt and Sudan.

There are many others. Can't get enough of it, can one!

Does no one like any of the multitude of Tarzan movies ? Especially those set in Mexico! Big Grin

1. Hatari... John Wayne any questions?
2. Gods must be Crazy I and II
3. Zulu
4. Out of Africa (a bit of a chick flick)
5. Snows of Kilimanjaro

I even started a Africa section in my DVD shelf. I have about 10 or so non-hunting Africa titles.

Kyler I still think In the Blood was a hunting movie. Great movie, but a hunting movie. It was too documentary to not be.

Here are a few pictures for you André from where "The four Feathers" actually took place:

Fort:

English war graves:

Winching out a stuck local guy:

The funny thing was that we where exploring this area of Sudan, and found the fort where the movie battles actually took place before seeing the film (which was filmed in Morocco btw). A couple of months later when we got to Uganda, we went to our first movie in about 6 months. Without knowing what the film was about before seeing it. It was "The Four Feathers"...

Gotta be "Flight of the Phoenix". The original, not the sad and terminally stupid and politically correct new version.

Without a doubt the "Out of Africa" but only when it is seen on the BIG SCREEN. Ghost and the Darkness was rather nice, but didn't capture the Full flavor so to speak.
