Too bad.

Does this apply retroactively? I have a leopard from last year that's ready to ship. Cites permit to import to US issued last year.
Thanks in advance for any info.

crbutlerJust talked with my outfitter...
He had a call to the minister... Per him it is much ado about nothing. The guy who signs the forms was fired. Until they can replace him, they cannot sign the forms.
Once they hire a new official, then things will carry on.

Not so sure about this. I have a trophy shipment in Dar waiting to be released. I was told the hold up was there was a shipment of live Baboons some tool was trying to smuggle out of Tanzania. It was holding up all trophy shipments until all the documentation required could be verified as to not being counterfeit.
I don't know who or what to believe, coming out of there anymore.

NakihunterIs a 2015 CITES import for US valid in 2016? Or do you need to get a new updated one?

sheephunterabJust in the process of booking Tanzania.....the BS never seems to end. Will wait on developments before confirming hunt....ugh
Naki,
That Cites permit is good. It is for a leopard shot in October 2015, the permit was issued in December 2015, and the trophies are now ready to ship. I'm not worried about that. I'm concerned that Tanzania will not export.

The export of a batch of live baboons, in spite of a temporary ban on the export of live animals/birds/reptiles is what sparked it off, reverbrating through the departments of the Game Division which ultimately dragged trophies from legally hunted wildlife to be included.
I am sure that once the light is discovered at the end of the tunnel these trophies will be released.
Somehow I think our resident USF&W representative might have a hand in this BS story.

StormsGSPTanzania in general is a bit of a mess right now. The new President has really been on a tear trying to cut government costs and stamp out corruption. As part of this drive he has gone through many government bodies and ministries and fired top officials. The unintended consequences are that there there is no effective leadership, and everyone in the government is afraid to sign off on ANYTHING. The government is pro-hunting and recognizes the benefits, this is not going to last forever.

sheephunterabJust spoke with our outfitter in Tanzania and it appears the person in charge of issuing the permits was recently fired and once a new person is appointed it will be business as usual.
Apparently there was an issue regarding export of vervet monkeys and some disagreement concerning the legality. It looks like what others have said about a change in personnel is true and now there is no one to sign the forms. I'm assured it is a temporary situation.

EXPORT FOR CITES LISTED TROPHIES
TAHOA would like to confirm that Tanzania has resumed the exporting all trophies with immediate effect.
TAHOA would like to apologize for any alarm caused by the SCI crosshairs newsletter sent out by SCI on the 17th of May 2016. SCI did indeed inquire about the exports and TAHOA advised them that it was a temporary interruption due to an internal clerical issue that would be resolved shortly, and there was no need to cause alarm amongst its members.
Yours Sincerely

My take is somewhat different. I think SCI overreacted and caused a panic when there was nothing to panic about. This is Africa, gentlemen.
I seem to recall that some group recently placed Tanzania something like 117th out of 167 countries on a list of the most corrupt countries. However, they recently purged 10,000 government "ghost" workers. I think President Magufuli, who was only elected last year, is making a huge difference. They don't call him the bulldozer for nothing.
This was just a hiccup.

fujotupuApparently Arusha began releasing hunting trophies several days ago; Dar will follow suit on Monday.
