We have two clients with Arub safaris in Namibia as I write this. Yesterday was their 4th huntng day and the pictured leopard was the result. An honest 179 lb. on the scales. Big congrats to the hunter. This is one is a real toad.

Wow, those are some whoppers Mark. Are there some specific reasons other than genetics why they get that big in those areas there? And were they hunted with dogs or by baiting? Other than a Mt. Nyala, a monster leopard like that is the last missing piece in my trophy room.

Mark: From what I've read and been told by my PH, John Sharp. the biggest leopards in Africa come from the south of Zimbabwe as a result of the cattle industry. Also, they were pretty heavily hunted for the same reason and as a result, almost exclusively nocturnal. Another interesting fact is that in the same area, leopards do not put their kill in trees because the lack of hyenas, also heavily hunted for the same reason. jorge

sable trail, that looks like the Khomas Hochland to me, an area full of cattle. Cats that dine on cattkle grows bigger/ heavier, that is a fact.
Though 180 lbs cats are occationally found, they are not common, and anyway, I think that weight are over-rated by a long shot. Compoare these 3 cats from recent clients:

Cat B


Cat C


Although Cat A was the only one that made 180 lbs, his skull was the smallest. Both Cat B&C made Napha gold, with weights of around 150 and 158 lbs respectively.

A leopard can eat 20% of their own body weight in one dinner.. The body length is more important IMO.

That's a very good point. Rowland only take the measurement of the skull, something I don't undrestand. I'm with you, body length seems to be a better option.

Can't the hide be stretched? They do it to Brown Bear all the time. I suppose that's why skull measurement counts there as well.

Our 2 clients with Arub this week are hunting plainsgame as well as the leopard. One guy is doing and 8 day package hunt for plains game only. I'll give you their numbers when they return.

FYI: As Pichon said you measure a leopard nose to tail with the skin on.

The reason Rowland Ward and (incidentally) SCI use skull measurement as the deciding factor is because it's the only accurate way to do it. If you do it by length, then the cat can indeed be stretched (as can any freshly killed cat) and if you do it by weight, other factors such as when it last bred or fed can alter things dramatically. - Really quoting a weight as a guide to size of a cat doesn't really mean anything at all.
