Yes, I only dreamed of it then, but those were the days! I found out for real not too long afterward. I'd love to do it all over again!

Do you have the whole article on the gorilla hunt?
I read it years ago in one of my dads hunting magazines. My first rifle was a Ruger 44 mag.
And ever since my encounter with a Gorilla I have been looking for it.

By the way Frank also carried a S&W 44 mag revolver.
He releated in the story how he had heard that in the close cover the Gorilla would sometimes
snatch the rifle out of the hunters hands, with his finger still in the trigger guard, and beat him to death with it.
This was why he chose the 44 Ruger as it was short and fired fast.

I read some on gorilla hunts many years ago at our hunting and fishing cabin..The story was from a magazine called TRUE, I beleive...
I remember them talking about the gorillas tearingl off your fingers in the trigger guard..So you should hunt with a carbine style short rifle..

N E 450 No2 - I had TWO copies of the original for decades but, at one point other, must have inadvertently chucked them out during a move or a spring cleanup, or the like (?). However, I'm on the hunt for it and will make sure you receive a CD, when I find it. If I were to guess, I'd say it had to be in "Outdoor-Life" 1962-63 or perhaps one of those "Man's Magazines" like "Argosy" or "Soldier of Fortune", so popular back then. The story was quite exciting, as I recall, with the wounded bull awaiting in ambush, when spotted and finished off. Nobody knew a hell of a lot about the true nature of the gorilla in those days. Can you imagine an ad such as this in today's environment?!

I had a 458 bolt rifle in my Gorilla event.
As he approached I was sure wishing I had my double rifle.

1962-63 I say also because Sonny Liston was then, heavyweight champ. In the article, or perhaps a subsequent one, Liston is featured next to the gorilla, with all the vital stats listed. It was hillarious but at the same, scary. The gorilla was twice + Liston's weight, it's chest somewhere in the sixties, twice the reach, fists 3 or more times the size of Liston's, with an estimated strength of 14 men!

Gorilla would be about as dangerous to hunt as an impala.

I would think the article on Frank Delano's hunt was in Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, or Field and Stream, as those were the magazines my dad took.

I would beg to differ. I just happen to be a world expert on the evolution and behaviour of large Primates including Gorillas - both mountain and lowland - so be careful who you call ignorant.

Berger - If you are an expert you might well alter your opinion, if not "beg off" giving it in the first place, were you at all familiar with the story we are conversing about.

Nickudu - I was commenting on the danger of hunting a gorrilla but I would be happy to "beg off" and maybe you should "alter your opinon" as well.

How can you say a gorilla wouldn't be dangerous to hunt. Have you ever seen what chimps do to eachother when fighting... They rip throats out, genitals off and equally off putting things. Frankly I am attached to my genitals in more ways then one. I would hate to see what a full grown male gorilla could do to someone who was one their bad side. I would be very interested in any books or articles anyone may have on the subject.
