Add bushbuck to your list . Although it has a truly unique and different taste , it is also really good .

Erik,
Your poll let me vote twice. Odd, that, so that second vote under nyala shouldn't be counted. It's good, but eland is better. Unless you meant for us to be able to vote again and again, heh, heh . . .

Ive only tasted eland biltong -and it was good- but I understand that eland is a lot like beef. Is that why its in the lead?

Eland, Impala, Springbok,L. Hartebeast, Kudu, warthog, croc..are my all time favorites and not in any particular order except Eland is by far my first choice.

I know for a fact that I didn't vote in this poll but I keep getting the message that there has already been a vote from this IP address.

At least it could show me the results.

Brad,

Bushbuck is there! Just a bit down the list...

Odie,

If you can't see the poll, i can tell you that Eland is winning without a doubt. Interestingly, both Walterhog, Mopane worms and Mysterious "bushmeat" which is often monkey, have also been voted by a few individuals with unusual tastes!

Sadly, I forgot to put in east african antilope such as the Grants and Thompsen Gazelle and Gerenuk. Please forgive me.

I think the best I've had overall is gerenuk. Better add it to the list. Next best is warthog shish ka bob!

P.S. I once had a camp cook in Zimbabwe serve up some finger sized fried hor d'eorves (never could spell that)
that were really sweet and tasty. Turned out to be leopard.

This was a tough one for me. I didn't get the opportunity to try eland (they weren't on the "menu"), so I had to give the nod to springbok. However, had we cooked the mountain zebra over the hot coals as we did springbok, I may have voted a bit differently. I loved the zebra, but fresh springbok backstrap over the coals won me over!

JohnTheGreek,

RE: Leopard. It's kinda hard to describe. It was cut into fingers (strips) and fried but not too hard. Very tender and....sweet is the best way I can describe it. I've had Dorado done the same way in Mexico but it didn't taste sweet(more like fish...duh!) like the leopard did. Maybe the Zim. cook put sugar on it?

While eland is my favorite overall, I voted for wildebeest because it is the tastiest meat, in my opinion. Eland is more tender, more subtle, and has better texture, but for pure raw tastiness, wildebeest is better.

This post made me think about last year in Na.
I had just shot a young kudu bull for the farmer for meat. My namibian friend I was hunting with wanted the colon out of it. It was time for breakfast so we went back and he cooked liver stuffed colon, cant remember what he called it. I had eggs and sausage, I told him I didnt eat kudu asses, as much to pick on him as anything. That evening we had kudu backstraps and I must have eaten half of the pile on the plate. My friend Danie said, " you know why they are so good? I cooked them in the same pan as breakfast, I cooked them in, in, ( he was trying to find the right word) asshole oil!"
The next morning as we were loading up to hunt, the old farm worker was munching a boiled toungue as danie told him I didnt like his kudu asshole breakfast. Old Johan couldnt belive it, I told him thats right, and I dont like eat toungues either because they lick their ass with that! In typical black african fashion, he didnt think it at all funny. He just said, save the jokes for the kudu and get in the truck!

Rich,

How did the Leopard taste? Kinda like pork? I've heard that is what mountian lion tastes like. Just curious.

Best,

Eland is winning, and rightly so, i love kudu, buffalo and impala too. Have also tried blesbok, wildebeest and springbok.

try blesbok brains dipped in egg wash and breadcrumbs and then shallow fried. yummy , also eland liver & eland heart is just the best stuff there is to cook chinese style.

kudu is superbly versatile as is impala. I prefer to adpat beef recipes for kudu and lamb recipes for impala.

why did anyone start this thread??!!!

i'm hungry now!
